Yes, the expansion team is in the midst of a five-match winless streak following a 1-0 loss to the Portland Timbers, but interviews Sunday weren’t conducted in hushed tones.

Since CONCACAF adopted the fall-to-spring Champions League model beginning with the 2008-09 season, Major League Soccer fans have been waiting for a local club to contend for the title and a spot at the FIFA Club World Cup.

The roster for the US Under-23 national team continues to feature a heavy MLS influence, with coach Andreas Herzog naming 12 players with MLS ties to a 23-man roster for Wednesday's friendly against Mexico (11pm ET, UniMás, UDN).

The match is part of both teams' preparations for this fall's CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. Players will train April 19-21 ahead of the match at StubHub Center in Carson, California.

AMSTERDAM – As Saturday's heartbreaking FA Cup semifinal loss to Arsenal was the first taste of Premier League-caliber opposition for Reading midfielder Daniel Williams, it seemed the perfect time to throw his performance under our statistical microscope.

Though the Royals fell agonizingly short of the club's first FA Cup final, losing in extra time, Williams repeatedly drew compliments from the BBC broadcast team. Late in regulation, color analyst Danny Murphy remarked, "He's been everywhere, Williams. He's been really, really good."

New York City FC encouraged by performances despite winless skid: "We have to stay positive"


NEW YORK – The winless streak is at five games after a 1-0 loss to the Portland Timbers at Yankee Stadium Sunday night, but New York City FC coach Jason Kreis is encouraged.


“With the performances in the last two matches, it shows me that I think we’re moving in the right direction,” Kreis said.


Hamstrung by injuries to five players, NYCFC also hasn’t gotten many kindly bounces of late, especially in key situations.

Pragmatic Portland Timbers keep it simple to edge NYCFC: "It was a big win for us, and badly needed"


Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter admonished his team for what he called a “sluggish” start that cost them a 2-0 loss at home last weekend to Orlando City SC.


And while the Timbers didn’t exactly rocket out of the gate this time out, they did just enough to grab a 1-0 win on the road Sunday against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.

AMSTERDAM – Rubio Rubin went the distance on the left wing as FC Utrecht moved to the brink of clinching Eredivisie safety with a 1-0 home victory over FC Twente on Sunday afternoon.


The US attacker was involved in the home side's few chances during a scoreless first half. Rubin drew a low save from 10 yards in the ninth minute, teed up a blast just wide by Mark van der Maarel midway through the frame and compelled the Twente netminder into a brave cross capture near the break.
