Mission accomplished.
It may not have been pretty, but the US Under-20s were professional, composed and efficient in dispatching El Salvador 2-0 in Saturday's CONCACAF playoff to qualify for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. The result at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Jamaica was the fourth straight shutout victory for the Americans, who sputtered in their first two matches with a draw against Guatemala and a loss to Panama.
CARSON, Calif. -- A huge decision looms for Tesho Akindele and Julio Morales, who are getting a taste of what it's like with the U.S. national team before they choose the country they want to represent in international soccer.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Caleb Porter will turn 40 next month, a relatively young age for a coach in MLS, but he’s been at the game for quite awhile.
And now that he’s embarking on his third season leading the Portland Timbers, following more than a decade in the college ranks, Porter said he’s still learning a lot about his trade. And last year, Porter said, was one of his most challenging.
The USA qualified for the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Saturday, securing a 2-0 victory over El Salvador in a do-or-die playoff match held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Jamaica.
Former RSL and Chivas USA academy forward Ben Spencer opened the scoring in the 37th minute and ex-LA Galaxy academy player Paul Arriola, who came on for Spencer at halftime, got the clincher in the 68th minute as the US U-20s advanced to their 14th FIFA Under-20 tournament.

AMSTERDAM – American forward Aron Jóhannsson helped AZ Alkmaar continue their quest for a Europa League spot, working 77 minutes in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at fourth-place PEC Zwolle in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The US forward put in a decent overall effort, but missed the frame with both of his shot attempts and had his pocket picked while set to break in on goal shortly after halftime. The Cheese Farmers remained a point off a Europa League place in fifth.

AMSTERDAM – Bolton left back Tim Ream was among the standouts as the second-flight visitors forced a home FA Cup replay by holding Liverpool to a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening.
The St. Louis native enjoyed his usual strong game on the ball while notching a team-high 10 clearances and three pass interceptions. In the 63rd minute, Ream snared a Liverpool pass to start the counter before eventually crossing for Eidur Gudjohnsen to fire over from a good position. The team will reunite to decide their fourth-round tie on either February 4 or 5.

Jurgen Klinsmann has selected an MLS-heavy US national team contingent to face Chile in the first test of 2015.
The USMNT boss on Saturday announced his 23-man roster for Wednesday's friendly match in Rancagua (6 pm ET on Fox Sports 1, UniMas and UDN) and it is highlighted by 20 MLS players, including eight who starred in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

CARSON, Calif. – The reigning MLS Cup champions opened preseason camp Friday, and focus wasn't on those who were missing – one mammoth figure, especially – but rather on someone who was back.
LAKE MARY, Fla. -- Orlando City SC may be an expansion team, but that isn’t stopping anyone in the organization from feeling confident about their chances in Major League Soccer this year.
Friday marked the first training session of the preseason for the team since joining MLS. The session was short, but the players joined coach Adrian Heath and club president Phil Rawlins afterward to speak to media members about the upcoming season, and the mood was buoyant.
It seems the Chicago Fire's extended courtship of Shaun Maloney has paid off.
According to reports in the British media, the Wigan Athletic playmaker has turned down a move to English Premier League side Leicester City in order to join the Men in Red ahead of the 2015 MLS season.
In fact, the deal could even be done in time for Maloney to join his new teammates as they report to Toyota Park for the opening of preseason activities on Sunday.
You probably don't know much about Bryan Rochez. And that's fair.
But if you've been watching the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Jamaica, you quickly began understanding why Orlando City SC put a Designated Player label on the 20-year-old Honduran striker.
After a wild match that included 13 penalty kicks and six goals in regulation and extra time, Iraq and Columbus Crew SC midfielder Justin Meram have advanced to the Asian Cup semifinals.
Meram started and played 45 minutes in Iraq's 3-3 (7-6) win over neighbors Iran in the AFC Asian Cup Semifinal early Friday morning in Canberra, Australia.
