MESSENGER's Last Day on Mercury

The first to orbit Mercury, the MESSENGER spacecraft came to rest on this region of Mercury's surface yesterday. Constructed from MESSENGER image and laser altimeter data, the scene looks north over the northeastern rim of the broad, lava filled Shakespeare basin. The large, 48 kilometer (30 mile) wide crater Janacek is near the upper left edge. Terrain height is color coded with red regions about 3 kilometers above blue ones. MESSENGER'S final orbit was predicted to end near the center, with the spacecraft impacting the surface at nearly 4 kilometers per second (over 8,700 miles per hour) and creating a new crater about 16 meters (52 feet) in diameter. The impact on the far side of Mercury was not observed by telescopes, but confirmed when no signal was detected from the spacecraft given time to emerge from behind the planet. Launched in 2004, the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemisty and Ranging spacecraft completed over 4,000 orbits after reaching the Solar System's innermost planet in 2011. via NASA http://ift.tt/1EygYcP

Re: [FD] #WorldPenguinDay or this cant be right, can it?

> Sure, If code with knowledge of an address is willing to act as an > oracle, then ASLR is not useful. This is really just an indirect (and > unlikely) way of leaking an address though. We'll but keep in mind here that the knowledge we are talking about is based on the binary image as far as I can tell and knowledge of the order of mapping, which given the mechanisms in place for privilege separation or at least common forking a child is not that far of a stretch. "I am mapping X and there will be Y mappings with a total size of Z before me whose base address is A from the first/last loaded module" > > Well, if you know in advance which address to leak you can arrange for > it to be a useless one, it would usually have to be MMAP_FIXED and be > sanitized (think KUSER_SHARED_DATA on Windows or the vsyscall page on > Linux) so as not to weaken ASLR. Well but these addresses are not fixed, it's just that modules are being loaded in alphabetical order sans ld.so and the distance between them is not randomized. Is KUSER_SHARED_DATA still not randomized? Compare all of this with the openbsd allocator and it's output and loaded modules. I haven't looked at their kernel but I'm assuming they randomize mmap base, then in the allocator the use arc4 to further randomize the offset into the allocated memory. This would fix circumstances except for where a module has a long string of repeated instructions that could be utilized. Also It's not just the first mapping, it can be any malloc (or direct mmap) output that you how many and the size of those who came before you. This is actually not a stretch especially in post-auth server-side paradigms. > Well, good luck. Thanks. I seem to recall hearing that once before in relation to similar in another OS when I pointed it out, "creepy" I'll just get my hands on another linux box somewhere; if this pattern holds its actually a really big problem. Consider akin to (and this is somewhat of an imaginary stretch) call malloc mov rcx, [user] lea rbx, [rax+rcx] ; wrap call [rbx+vtableoff] ; actually lands in libc

Re: [FD] #WorldPenguinDay or this cant be right, can it?

> It sounds like you're asking "If I can learn an address, have I defeated > ASLR", and the answer is usually yes. Really? Because leaking a heap address in windows, openbsd, etc doesn't yield a full collapse of all loaded modules randomization given the preconditions; I'm asking that it's not just my box exhibiting this behavior- which is a long story why it must just be mine. >It depends on the circumstances of > course, but leaking any address to an attacker would usually be considered a > bug and renders ASLR essentially useless. Well, you are somewhat missing the gravity here. If this is generally reproducible, you don't need the address to leak, you just need a series of arithmetic operations to land you at a fixed offset within the target module. no read back requisite. I wouldn't argue that finding the exact required arguments for arithmetic was not rare however, just that an ASLR "metaprogramming primitive" potentially exists. > For example, if you can find some JavaScript that tells you the address of > an object on the heap or the base address of a module, that would be > considered a security bug. I'm fairly positive that no ASLR scheme is intended to entirely and totally collapse given a single address that you don't necessarily even need to know. Thus I find it hard to believe this is the case. >You don't usually run untrusted python, > so > python's id() isn't a bug - but you do run untrusted JavaScript. Really? Because your employer does exactly that. The bigger question was the behavior, not python. It seems a practical extension of the spy in the sandbox stuff to potentially grab enough of an address to leverage this in javascript, although code is not yet forthcoming there. However giving the cache line and physical to virtual address scheme mappings, this seems likely.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 04/30/15

Robotic Refueling Mission-2 (RRM-2): Virts worked with ground teams to configure the Japanese Experiment Module Airlock (JEMAL) and extend the JEMAL slide table to position the RRM for transfer. The Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) operators on the ground are currently using the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) to remove task board (TB)3 from the RRM On-Orbit Transfer Cage (ROTC) followed by a Mobile Transporter (MT) translation from Work Site (WS)7 to WS2 for TB3 installation.  This is day 1 of at least 6 days of ground operations to transfer RRM-2. Rodent Research-2 Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (RR-2 CASIS): Kelly set up equipment and the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) for fixative swap operations. He retrieved the test subject samples prepared 24 hours ago, removed the preserving fixative and replaced with fresh fixative. The primary objective of this research is to monitor the effects of the space environment on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems of mice as model organisms of human health and disease. Living in microgravity results in significant and rapid effects on the physiology of mice that mimic the process of aging and some diseases in humans on Earth, including muscle atrophy and the loss of bone mineral density. This project will help scientists to discover new molecular targets that can facilitate the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of muscle and bone-related diseases. Long-duration exposure to microgravity will also induce changes in gene expression, protein synthesis, metabolism, and eye structure/morphology that will be identifiable as a series of assessable biomarkers for tracking the onset and progression of disease. Defining the Relation Between Biomarkers of Oxidative and Inflammatory Stress and Atherosclerosis Risk in Astronauts During and After Long-duration Spaceflight (Cardio Ox): Cristoforetti, with Virts as the Crew Medical Officer (CMO) and remote guidance from the ground, performed the return minus 14 day (R-14) ultrasound scans for Cardio Ox followed by blood pressure measurements and logging results. The objective of Cardio Ox is to determine whether biological markers of oxidative and inflammatory stress are elevated during and after space flight and whether this results in an increased, long-term risk of atherosclerosis in astronauts. Crew members provide blood and urine samples to assess biomarkers before launch, three sessions while in space, and again post-flight. Ultrasound scans of the carotid and brachial arteries will be obtained at the same time points, as well as through 5 years after landing as an indicator of cardiovascular health Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF):  Cristoforetti performed the third and final on board cable reconfiguration on the SCOF to support ground checkouts. This is in preparation for the Soret Facet cell2 experiment planned for May 12. The Soret effect in fluids is a thermodynamic phenomenon in which different particles respond in different ways to varying temperatures. The effect, studied by the Swiss chemist Charles Soret, has been difficult to examine in detail on Earth because of gravity. The Study on Soret effect (thermal diffusion process) for the mixed solution by the in-situ observation technique facilitated at SCOF (Soret-Facet) is the first investigation to verify Soret conditions in steady and changing conditions, and to compare the Soret effect in microgravity with results on the ground, an important measurement for calibrating future investigations.  European Physiological Module (EPM):  Cristoforetti performed a software update of EPM laptop by reloading software using a ghost image and EPM Universal Serial Bus (USB) stick.  Space Aging:  Cristoforetti retrieved the Space Aging sample #1 from the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF), placed it in a sample return bag and stowed in the Minus Eighty Degree Celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI).  Space Aging is an investigation to study of the effects of space flight on the aging of the C. elegans roundworm, a model organism for a range of biological studies. Microgravity causes a number of physiological changes, like heart and bone deconditioning, involving mechanisms that are poorly understood and may affect the rate at which organisms and astronauts age. Space Aging will grow millimeter-long C. elegans roundworms in microgravity and compare their health and longevity with control specimens kept on Earth.  Nanoracks Module 24:  Kelly answered questions regarding the NanoRacks module install that was performed on April 18. The ground is currently unable to “see” Module-24 or the USB drive that was installed. These answers will help troubleshooting efforts and assist in the development of future ops products.  Body Measures:  Kelly, acting as an operator, assisted Virts in setting up equipment to collect his third and final calibration and body pose photographs and the circumference measurements in support of the Body Measures experiment. Currently, NASA does not have sufficient in-flight anthropometric data (body measurements) gathered to assess the impact of physical body shape and size changes on suit sizing. This study will involve collecting anthropometric data (body measurements) using digital still and video imagery and a tape measure to measure segmental length, height, depth, and circumference data for all body segments (i.e., chest, waist, hip, arms, legs, etc.) from astronauts for pre-, post-, and in-flight conditions. S-Band String 1: Yesterday evening following a Loss of Signal (LOS), Ku-Band and S-Band did not lock up on Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) 171.  Ku-Band was reacquired on the following pass on TDRS 41 but the S-Band outage persisted.  Ground controllers were able to regain ISS telemetry.  Ku-Band Contingency Command and Telemetry (CCT) mode was enabled over a Russian Ground Pass to allow ground controllers to use Ku-Band commanding to swap S-Band from String 1 to String 2.  Once configured on String 2, good command link and telemetry link were established.  Initial review of data from troubleshooting shows the Baseband Signal Processor (BSP)-1 is performing nominally and S-Band String 1 has been configured as a hot backup.  The team is continuing to investigate. Waste and Hygiene Compartment (WHC) Flush Water Pressure Relief T-Hose Installation: Virts installed a pressure relief hose on Dose Pump PY-3 and routed it through panel WHC-03 with the Urine Receptacle Hose. This configuration eliminates the need to […]

Across the Sun

A long solar filament stretches across the relatively calm surface of the Sun in this telescopic snap shot from April 27. The negative or inverted narrowband image was made in the light of ionized hydrogen atoms. Seen at the upper left, the magnificent curtain of magnetized plasma towers above surface and actually reaches beyond the Sun's edge. How long is the solar filament? About as long as the distance from Earth to Moon, illustrated by the scale insert at the left. Tracking toward the right across the solar disk a day later the long filament erupted, lifting away from the Sun's surface. Monitored by Sun staring satellites, a coronal mass ejection was also blasted from the site but is expected to swing wide of our fair planet. via NASA http://ift.tt/1zs3mAW

Information Theoretic Interestingness Measures for Cross-Ontology Data Mining in the Mouse Anatomy Ontology and the Gene Ontology. (arXiv:1504.08027v1 [cs.AI])

Community annotation of biological entities with concepts from multiple bio-ontologies has created large and growing repositories of ontology-based annotation data with embedded implicit relationships among orthogonal ontologies. Development of efficient data mining methods and metrics to mine and assess the quality of the mined relationships has not kept pace with the growth of annotation data. In this study, we present a data mining method that uses ontology-guided generalization to discover relationships across ontologies along with a new interestingness metric based on information theory. We apply our data mining algorithm and interestingness measures to gene expression datasets from the Gene Expression Database at the Mouse Genomics Institute as a preliminary proof of concept to mine relationships between developmental stages in the mouse anatomy ontology and Gene Ontology concepts (biological process, molecular function and cellular component). In addition, we present a comparison of our interestingness metric to four existing metrics. Ontology-based annotation datasets provide a valuable resource for discovery of relationships across ontologies. The use of efficient data mining methods and appropriate interestingness metrics enables the identification of high quality relationships.

Detecting Concept-level Emotion Cause in Microblogging. (arXiv:1504.08050v1 [cs.CL])

In this paper, we propose a Concept-level Emotion Cause Model (CECM), instead of the mere word-level models, to discover causes of microblogging users' diversified emotions on specific hot event. A modified topic-supervised biterm topic model is utilized in CECM to detect emotion topics' in event-related tweets, and then context-sensitive topical PageRank is utilized to detect meaningful multiword expressions as emotion causes. Experimental results on a dataset from Sina Weibo, one of the largest microblogging websites in China, show CECM can better detect emotion causes than baseline methods.

Verification of Generalized Inconsistency-Aware Knowledge and Action Bases (Extended Version). (arXiv:1504.08108v1 [cs.AI])

Knowledge and Action Bases (KABs) have been put forward as a semantically rich representation of a domain, using a DL KB to account for its static aspects, and actions to evolve its extensional part over time, possibly introducing new objects. Recently, KABs have been extended to manage inconsistency, with ad-hoc verification techniques geared towards specific semantics. This work provides a twofold contribution along this line of research. On the one hand, we enrich KABs with a high-level, compact action language inspired by Golog, obtaining so called Golog-KABs (GKABs). On the other hand, we introduce a parametric execution semantics for GKABs, so as to elegantly accomodate a plethora of inconsistency-aware semantics based on the notion of repair. We then provide several reductions for the verification of sophisticated first-order temporal properties over inconsistency-aware GKABs, and show that it can be addressed using known techniques, developed for standard KABs.

Explanation of Stagnation at Points that are not Local Optima in Particle Swarm Optimization by Potential Analysis. (arXiv:1504.08241v1 [cs.AI])

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a nature-inspired meta-heuristic for solving continuous optimization problems. In the literature, the potential of the particles of swarm has been used to show that slightly modified PSO guarantees convergence to local optima. Here we show that under specific circumstances the unmodified PSO, even with swarm parameters known (from the literature) to be good, almost surely does not yield convergence to a local optimum is provided. This undesirable phenomenon is called stagnation. For this purpose, the particles' potential in each dimension is analyzed mathematically. Additionally, some reasonable assumptions on the behavior if the particles' potential are made. Depending on the objective function and, interestingly, the number of particles, the potential in some dimensions may decrease much faster than in other dimensions. Therefore, these dimensions lose relevance, i.e., the contribution of their entries to the decisions about attractor updates becomes insignificant and, with positive probability, they never regain relevance. If Brownian Motion is assumed to be an approximation of the time-dependent drop of potential, practical, i.e., large values for this probability are calculated. Finally, on chosen multidimensional polynomials of degree two, experiments are provided showing that the required circumstances occur quite frequently. Furthermore, experiments are provided showing that even when the very simple sphere function is processed the described stagnation phenomenon occurs. Consequently, unmodified PSO does not converge to any local optimum of the chosen functions for tested parameter settings.

Frugal Bribery in Voting. (arXiv:1504.08248v1 [cs.AI])

Bribery in elections is an important problem in computational social choice theory. However, bribery with money is often illegal in elections. Motivated by this, we introduce the notion of frugal bribery and formulate two new pertinent computational problems which we call Frugal-bribery and Frugal- $bribery to capture bribery without money in elections. In the proposed model, the briber is frugal in nature and this is captured by her inability to bribe votes of a certain kind, namely, non-vulnerable votes. In the Frugal-bribery problem, the goal is to make a certain candidate win the election by changing only vulnerable votes. In the Frugal-{dollar}bribery problem, the vulnerable votes have prices and the goal is to make a certain candidate win the election by changing only vulnerable votes, subject to a budget constraint of the briber. We further formulate two natural variants of the Frugal-{dollar}bribery problem namely Uniform-frugal-{dollar}bribery and Nonuniform-frugal-{dollar}bribery where the prices of the vulnerable votes are, respectively, all the same or different.

We study the computational complexity of the above problems for unweighted and weighted elections for several commonly used voting rules. We observe that, even if we have only a small number of candidates, the problems are intractable for all voting rules studied here for weighted elections, with the sole exception of the Frugal-bribery problem for the plurality voting rule. In contrast, we have polynomial time algorithms for the Frugal-bribery problem for plurality, veto, k-approval, k-veto, and plurality with runoff voting rules for unweighted elections. However, the Frugal-{dollar}bribery problem is intractable for all the voting rules studied here barring the plurality and the veto voting rules for unweighted elections.

Manipulation is Harder with Incomplete Votes. (arXiv:1504.08256v1 [cs.AI])

The Coalitional Manipulation (CM) problem has been studied extensively in the literature for many voting rules. The CM problem, however, has been studied only in the complete information setting, that is, when the manipulators know the votes of the non-manipulators. A more realistic scenario is an incomplete information setting where the manipulators do not know the exact votes of the non- manipulators but may have some partial knowledge of the votes. In this paper, we study a setting where the manipulators know a partial order for each voter that is consistent with the vote of that voter. In this setting, we introduce and study two natural computational problems - (1) Weak Manipulation (WM) problem where the manipulators wish to vote in a way that makes their preferred candidate win in at least one extension of the partial votes of the non-manipulators; (2) Strong Manipulation (SM) problem where the manipulators wish to vote in a way that makes their preferred candidate win in all possible extensions of the partial votes of the non-manipulators. We study the computational complexity of the WM and the SM problems for commonly used voting rules such as plurality, veto, k-approval, k-veto, maximin, Copeland, and Bucklin. Our key finding is that, barring a few exceptions, manipulation becomes a significantly harder problem in the setting of incomplete votes.

On the Relationship between Sum-Product Networks and Bayesian Networks. (arXiv:1501.01239v2 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

In this paper, we establish some theoretical connections between Sum-Product Networks (SPNs) and Bayesian Networks (BNs). We prove that every SPN can be converted into a BN in linear time and space in terms of the network size. The key insight is to use Algebraic Decision Diagrams (ADDs) to compactly represent the local conditional probability distributions at each node in the resulting BN by exploiting context-specific independence (CSI). The generated BN has a simple directed bipartite graphical structure. We show that by applying the Variable Elimination algorithm (VE) to the generated BN with ADD representations, we can recover the original SPN where the SPN can be viewed as a history record or caching of the VE inference process. To help state the proof clearly, we introduce the notion of {\em normal} SPN and present a theoretical analysis of the consistency and decomposability properties. We conclude the paper with some discussion of the implications of the proof and establish a connection between the depth of an SPN and a lower bound of the tree-width of its corresponding BN.

Two Timescale Stochastic Approximation with Controlled Markov noise and Off-policy temporal difference learning. (arXiv:1503.09105v3 [math.DS] UPDATED)

We present for the first time an asymptotic convergence analysis of two-timescale stochastic approximation driven by controlled Markov noise. In particular, both the faster and slower recursions have non-additive Markov noise components in addition to martingale difference noise. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of our framework by relating it to limiting differential inclusions in both time-scales that are defined in terms of the invariant probability measures associated with the controlled Markov processes. Finally, we show how to solve the off-policy convergence problem for temporal difference learning with linear function approximation using our results.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 04/29/15

59 Progress (59P) Status:  Last night Russian ground controllers resumed 59P troubleshooting during Russian ground passes and were able to establish communications with the vehicle and review telemetry.  Russian controllers configured the refueling system to feed the thrusters and made two unsuccessful attempts to command the thrusters to stabilize the vehicle’s angular rotation. Per Mission Control Center Moscow (MCC-M) request, the crew will take photos of 59P when it was estimated to be approximately 170 km under the ISS. In the meantime, Moscow has officially announced that 59P will not dock to the ISS.  Rodent Research-2 Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (RR-2 CASIS): Virts and Kelly performed bone density scans and collected samples from five test subjects.  This research is to monitor the effects of the space environment on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems of mice as model organisms of human health and disease. Gene, Immune and Cellular Responses to Single and Combined Space Flight Conditions – A (Triplelux-A): Cristoforetti continued operations for the first runs of Triplelux-A. She integrated the first Experiment Container (EC) handling Mechanism (HM) interface in the EC and installed the EC on the Biolab rotor, retrieved the Triplelux Reservoir A (three) and installed into the Triplelux-A automatic ambient stowage (AAS) Insert.  Finally, the crew retrieved the first culture tube A (one) from MELFI, thawed in the Biolab glovebox and inserted into the Tripleux EC.  Triplelux-A uses a rat macrophage cell line to investigate and compare the ability of macrophages to kill pathogens under normal gravity and microgravity conditions. The goal is to gain a better understanding of immune suppression in spaceflight. Electromagnetic Levitation (EML):  Cristoforetti changed the mode of the High Speed Camera to change the magnification factor. The EML provides containerless processing of liquid metals in a micro-gravity environment and precise measurement of their thermo-physical properties. EML aims to increase the performance of metallic/alloy structures through an understanding of how solidification can be controlled and develop a data base of properties to allow better process modeling. The experiment investigates solidification and microstructural evolution and evaluates thermo-physical properties of highly reactive molten metals. Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF):  Cristoforetti performed the second of three on board cable reconfigurations on the SCOF to support ground checkouts. False Fire Indication in Treadmill 2 (T2) Rack: This morning a fire alarm annunciated in the T2 rack. The crew immediately powered down the rack.  Cabin and fire port Compound Specific Analyzer-Combustible Products (CSA-CP) readings were zero with no odor present.  At the time of the alarm, the crew was exercising on T2 and reported that the tread belt stopped moving immediately prior to the alarm.  T2 is currently powered down and the crew is no-go for exercise. Prefix-Projection Global Constraint for Sequential Pattern Mining. (arXiv:1504.07877v1 [cs.AI])

Sequential pattern mining under constraints is a challenging data mining task. Many efficient ad hoc methods have been developed for mining sequential patterns, but they are all suffering from a lack of genericity. Recent works have investigated Constraint Programming (CP) methods, but they are not still effective because of their encoding. In this paper, we propose a global constraint based on the projected databases principle which remedies to this drawback. Experiments show that our approach clearly outperforms CP approaches and competes well with ad hoc methods on large datasets.

Optimizations for Decision Making and Planning in Description Logic Dynamic Knowledge Bases. (arXiv:1502.04665v6 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

Artifact-centric models for business processes recently raised a lot of attention as they manage to combine structural (i.e. data related) with dynamical (i.e. process related) aspects in a seamless way. Many frameworks developed under this approach, although, are not built explicitly for planning, one of the most prominent operations related to business processes. In this paper, we try to overcome this by proposing a framework aimed at describing rich business domains through Description Logic-based ontologies, and where a set of actions allows the system to evolve by modifying such ontologies. Such framework, by offering action rewriting and knowledge partialization, represents a viable and formal environment to develop decision making and planning techniques for DL-based artifact-centric business domains.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 04/28/15

59 Progress (59P) Status: 59P launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 2:09 AM CDT and achieved orbital insertion. Shortly after the third stage separation, the ground experienced partial loss of communication with the vehicle. Mission Control Center (MCC)-Moscow attempts to re-gain communication with the vehicle over subsequent ground passes were unsuccessful. The next troubleshooting opportunity will be during the next ground pass at approximately 8:00 PM CDT.  Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF):  Cristoforetti set up the Ryutai rack for the next Soret Facet experiment by removing a Fluid Physics Experiment Facility (FPEF) cable and reconfigured a Thermo Module converter cable on the Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF).  This is the first of three on board cable reconfigurations with checkouts performed by the ground this week prior to the Soret Facet cell2 experiment planned for May 12. TripleLux-A:  Cristoforetti removed the Biolab reference Experiment Containers (EC) from the centrifuge Rotor L and installed the Triplelux EC’s and the Triplelux dummy mass for the EC characterization in preparation for the first Triplelux-A experiment run.  Long-term space missions present a number of risks for astronauts. Some effects of the space environment level appear to act at the cellular level and it is important to understand the underlying mechanisms of these effects. This project uses a rat macrophage cell line to focus on two aspects of cellular function which may have medical importance: i) The synergy between the effects of the space radiation environment and microgravity on cellular function and, ii) The impairment of immune functions under spaceflight conditions. Drain Brain:  Cristoforetti set up the Human Research Facility (HRF) Pulmonary Function System (PFS) and initiated hardware warmup in support of her final (Flight Day 161) Drain Brain Plethysmography measurement.  The crew verifies the Ultrasound 2 and Video Power Converter configuration, sets up a video camera and performs ultrasound scans with guidance from the Drain Brain ground team.  On Earth, blood flows down from a person’s brain back toward the heart thanks in part to gravity, but very little is known about how this flow happens without gravity’s effects.  Many crewmembers report headaches and other neurological symptoms in space which may be related to the absence of gravity acting on blood flowing through the veins. Drain Brain uses a special neck collar to measure blood flow from the brain, to help researchers understand which physical processes in the body can compensate for the lack of gravity to ensure blood flows properly. Robotic refueling Mission-Phase 2 (RRM-2):  Cristoforetti completed a JEM Airlock depress and venting in preparation for Thursday’s planned operations to deploy the RRM-2 task boards using the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS).  The objective of RRM-P2 operations is to demonstrate servicing capabilities. These new technologies, tools and techniques could eventually give satellite owners resources to diagnose problems on orbit, fix anomalies, and keep certain spacecraft instruments performing longer in space. Rodent Research-2 Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (RR-2 CASIS): Yesterday during the Bone Densitometer calibration procedure the team received errors. Earlier today Virts, with ground specialist assistance, completed troubleshooting which allowed the Bone Densitometer calibration to be completed successfully.  The second session of Rodents processing is planned for tomorrow. Water Recovery System (WRS) Distillation Assembly (DA) Remove & Replace (R&R):  Earlier this morning Kelly R&Rd the WRS DA. This was required due an increase in compressor temperatures and a decrease in the production rate. The UPA has been repowered and is currently in a process cycle. SpaceX(SpX)-6 Cargo Transfer:  Virts and Kelly were scheduled to continue with SpX-6 cargo operations today.  Today the crew started loading the DRAGON with return items.  At the completion of today’s operations transfer specialist are reporting that the crew is 60% complete with required cargo transfer.  Today’s Planned Activities All activities were completed unless otherwise noted. Building Hierarchies of Concepts via Crowdsourcing. (arXiv:1504.07302v1 [cs.AI])

Hierarchies of concepts are useful in many applications from navigation to organization of objects. Usually, a hierarchy is created in a centralized manner by employing a group of domain experts, a time-consuming and expensive process. The experts often design one single hierarchy to best explain the semantic relationships among the concepts, and ignore the natural uncertainty that may exist in the process. In this paper, we propose a crowdsourcing system to build a hierarchy and furthermore capture the underlying uncertainty. Our system maintains a distribution over possible hierarchies and actively selects questions to ask using an information gain criterion. We evaluate our methodology on simulated data and on a set of real world application domains. Experimental results show that our system is robust to noise, efficient in picking questions, cost-effective and builds high quality hierarchies.

Private Disclosure of Information in Health Tele-monitoring. (arXiv:1504.07313v1 [cs.CR])

We present a novel framework, called Private Disclosure of Information (PDI), which is aimed to prevent an adversary from inferring certain sensitive information about subjects using the data that they disclosed during communication with an intended recipient. We show cases where it is possible to achieve perfect privacy regardless of the adversary's auxiliary knowledge while preserving full utility of the information to the intended recipient and provide sufficient conditions for such cases. We also demonstrate the applicability of PDI on a real-world data set that simulates a health tele-monitoring scenario.

Reader-Aware Multi-Document Summarization via Sparse Coding. (arXiv:1504.07324v1 [cs.CL])

We propose a new MDS paradigm called reader-aware multi-document summarization (RA-MDS). Specifically, a set of reader comments associated with the news reports are also collected. The generated summaries from the reports for the event should be salient according to not only the reports but also the reader comments. To tackle this RA-MDS problem, we propose a sparse-coding-based method that is able to calculate the salience of the text units by jointly considering news reports and reader comments. Another reader-aware characteristic of our framework is to improve linguistic quality via entity rewriting. The rewriting consideration is jointly assessed together with other summarization requirements under a unified optimization model. To support the generation of compressive summaries via optimization, we explore a finer syntactic unit, namely, noun/verb phrase. In this work, we also generate a data set for conducting RA-MDS. Extensive experiments on this data set and some classical data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Combining Existential Rules and Transitivity: Next Steps. (arXiv:1504.07443v1 [cs.AI])

We consider existential rules (aka Datalog+) as a formalism for specifying ontologies. In recent years, many classes of existential rules have been exhibited for which conjunctive query (CQ) entailment is decidable. However, most of these classes cannot express transitivity of binary relations, a frequently used modelling construct. In this paper, we address the issue of whether transitivity can be safely combined with decidable classes of existential rules.

First, we prove that transitivity is incompatible with one of the simplest decidable classes, namely aGRD (acyclic graph of rule dependencies), which clarifies the landscape of `finite expansion sets' of rules.

Second, we show that transitivity can be safely added to linear rules (a subclass of guarded rules, which generalizes the description logic DL-Lite-R) in the case of atomic CQs, and also for general CQs if we place a minor syntactic restriction on the rule set. This is shown by means of a novel query rewriting algorithm that is specially tailored to handle transitivity rules.

Third, for the identified decidable cases, we pinpoint the combined and data complexities of query entailment.

Can Machines Truly Think. (arXiv:1504.07571v1 [cs.AI])

Can machines truly think? This question and its answer have many implications that depend, in large part, on any number of assumptions underlying how the issue has been addressed or considered previously. A crucial question, and one that is almost taken for granted, is the starting point for this discussion: Can "thought" be achieved or emulated by algorithmic procedures?

Or's of And's for Interpretable Classification, with Application to Context-Aware Recommender Systems. (arXiv:1504.07614v1 [cs.LG])

We present a machine learning algorithm for building classifiers that are comprised of a small number of disjunctions of conjunctions (or's of and's). An example of a classifier of this form is as follows: If X satisfies (x1 = 'blue' AND x3 = 'middle') OR (x1 = 'blue' AND x2 = '<15') OR (x1 = 'yellow'), then we predict that Y=1, ELSE predict Y=0. An attribute-value pair is called a literal and a conjunction of literals is called a pattern. Models of this form have the advantage of being interpretable to human experts, since they produce a set of conditions that concisely describe a specific class. We present two probabilistic models for forming a pattern set, one with a Beta-Binomial prior, and the other with Poisson priors. In both cases, there are prior parameters that the user can set to encourage the model to have a desired size and shape, to conform with a domain-specific definition of interpretability. We provide two scalable MAP inference approaches: a pattern level search, which involves association rule mining, and a literal level search. We show stronger priors reduce computation. We apply the Bayesian Or's of And's (BOA) model to predict user behavior with respect to in-vehicle context-aware personalized recommender systems.

Formalising Hypothesis Virtues in Knowledge Graphs: A General Theoretical Framework and its Validation in Literature-Based Discovery Experiments. (arXiv:1503.09137v2 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

We introduce an approach to discovery informatics that uses so called knowledge graphs as the essential representation structure. Knowledge graph is an umbrella term that subsumes various approaches to tractable representation of large volumes of loosely structured knowledge in a graph form. It has been used primarily in the Web and Linked Open Data contexts, but is applicable to any other area dealing with knowledge representation. In the perspective of our approach motivated by the challenges of discovery informatics, knowledge graphs correspond to hypotheses. We present a framework for formalising so called hypothesis virtues within knowledge graphs. The framework is based on a classic work in philosophy of science, and naturally progresses from mostly informative foundational notions to actionable specifications of measures corresponding to particular virtues. These measures can consequently be used to determine refined sub-sets of knowledge graphs that have large relative potential for making discoveries. We validate the proposed framework by experiments in literature-based discovery. The experiments have demonstrated the utility of our work and its superiority w.r.t. related approaches.

[FD] libarchive - Out of bounds read using malformed cpio archive

== Background == libarchive is a library for manipulating different streaming archive formats, including certain tar variants, several cpio formats, and both BSD and GNU ar variants. == Affected software == bsdtar == Version == All tests were performed using commit 296efb3db188fa4bf7b0e7b5c61d404f9145f0ab == Description == Initial fuzzing was performed using afl-fuzzer Using a crafted tar file bsdtar can perform an out-of-bounds memory read which will lead to a SEGFAULT. The issue exists when the executable skips data in the archive. The amount of data to skip is defined in byte offset [16-19] If ASLR is disabled, the issue can lead to high CPU load, and potential CPU exhaustion in single-core hosts. The issue turned out to be a problem with the cpio reader: Libarchive identifies the constructed file as a big-endian binary cpio format with a very large (>2GB) size. An overflow in parsing the size field caused libarchive to treat this size as a negative value and lead to an attempt to skip the file position forward by a negative number of bytes. == PoC == Additional information and PoC archive can be found here http://ift.tt/1bQEUP5 == Solution == The issue was fixed in commit e6c9668f3202215ddb71617b41c19b6f05acf008. == Timeline == 2015-01-29 - Initial report 2015-02-02 - Response with proposed fix 2015-02-02 - Fix was confirmed to resolve the issue == Credits == Reported by Paris Zoumpouloglou of Project Zero labs (https://projectzero.gr)
