Often imaged but rarely mentioned, Messier 43 is a large star forming region in its own right. It's just part of the star forming complex of gas and dust that includes the larger, more famous neighboring Messier 42, the Great Orion Nebula. In fact, the Great Orion Nebula itself lies off the lower edge of this scene. The close-up of Messier 43 was made while testing the capabilities of a near-infrared instrument with one of the twin 6.5 meter Magellan telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory in the Chilean Andes. The composite image shifts the otherwise invisible infrared wavelengths to blue, green, and red colors. [FD] CVE-2014-7952, Android ADB backup APK injection vulnerability

The Android operating system offers a backup/restore mechanism of installed packages through the ADB utility. Full backup of applications including the private files stored on /data partition is performed by default, but applications can customize this behavior by implementing a BackupAgent class. This way they can feed the backup process with custom files and data. SEARCH-LAB Ltd. discovered a vulnerability in the design of the Android backup mechanism: the backup manager, which invokes the custom BackupAgent does not filter the data stream returned by the applications. A malicious BackupAgent (without any Android permissions) is able to inject additional applications (APKs) through reflection into the backup archive without the user's consent. Upon restoration of the backup archive, the system installs the injected, additional application (since it is already part of the backup archive). The installed malware could gain any (non-system) permissions it wanted without any confirmation dialogs. SEARCH-LAB Ltd. reported the vulnerability to the Android security team on July 14, 2014, but the issue was still not fixed. This means as of today, July 10, 2015 all current Android versions are affected, including L (5.1.1). Achieving Synergy in Cognitive Behavior of Humanoids via Deep Learning of Dynamic Visuo-Motor-Attentional Coordination. (arXiv:1507.02347v1 [cs.AI])

The current study examines how adequate coordination among different cognitive processes including visual recognition, attention switching, action preparation and generation can be developed via learning of robots by introducing a novel model, the Visuo-Motor Deep Dynamic Neural Network (VMDNN). The proposed model is built on coupling of a dynamic vision network, a motor generation network, and a higher level network allocated on top of these two. The simulation experiments using the iCub simulator were conducted for cognitive tasks including visual object manipulation responding to human gestures. The results showed that synergetic coordination can be developed via iterative learning through the whole network when spatio-temporal hierarchy and temporal one can be self-organized in the visual pathway and in the motor pathway, respectively, such that the higher level can manipulate them with abstraction.

Automated Matchmaking to Improve Accuracy of Applicant Selection for University Education System. (arXiv:1507.02439v1 [cs.AI])

The accurate applicant selection for university education is imperative to ensure fairness and optimal use of institutional resources. Although various approaches are operational in tertiary educational institutions for selecting applicants, a novel method of automated matchmaking is explored in the current study. The method functions by matching a prospective students skills profile to a programmes requisites profile.

Empirical comparisons of the results, calculated by automated matchmaking and two other selection methods, show matchmaking to be a viable alternative for accurate selection of applicants. Matchmaking offers a unique advantage that it neither requires data from other applicants nor compares applicants with each other. Instead, it emphasises norms that define admissibility to a programme.

We have proposed the use of technology to minimize the gap between students aspirations, skill sets and course requirements. It is a solution to minimize the number of students who get frustrated because of mismatched course selection.

We use Markov logic networks (MLNs) in order to find the most probable, classified and coherent $\mathcal{EL}^{++}$ ontology from an $\mathcal{MEL}^{++}$ knowledge base. In particular, we develop a novel way to deal with concrete domains (also known as datatypes) by extending MLN's cutting plane inference (CPI) algorithm.

Managing Autonomous Mobility on Demand Systems for Better Passenger Experience. (arXiv:1507.02563v1 [cs.AI])

Autonomous mobility on demand systems, though still in their infancy, have very promising prospects in providing urban population with sustainable and safe personal mobility in the near future. While much research has been conducted on both autonomous vehicles and mobility on demand systems, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that shows how to manage autonomous mobility on demand systems for better passenger experience. We introduce the Expand and Target algorithm which can be easily integrated with three different scheduling strategies for dispatching autonomous vehicles. We implement an agent-based simulation platform and empirically evaluate the proposed approaches with the New York City taxi data. Experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm significantly improve passengers' experience by reducing the average passenger waiting time by up to 29.82% and increasing the trip success rate by up to 7.65%.

A Logic of Knowing How. (arXiv:1505.06651v3 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

In this paper, we propose a single-agent modal logic framework for reasoning about goal-direct "knowing how" based on ideas from linguistics, philosophy, modal logic and automated planning. We first define a modal language to express "I know how to guarantee phi given psi" with a semantics not based on standard epistemic models but labelled transition systems that represent the agent's knowledge of his own abilities. A sound and complete proof system is given to capture the valid reasoning patterns about "knowing how" where the most important axiom suggests its compositional nature.

Plant Gravity Sensing 2 (PGS2):  After Kelly removed a seed paper kit from a Minus Eighty Degree Celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) he noted mold on the growth media.  He discontinued the PGS2 activities and reported his observations to ground experts.  This investigation supports the study of cellular formation of the gravity sensors and the molecular mechanism for gravity sensing in plants grown in microgravity conditions. Capillary Effects of Drinking in the Microgravity Environment (Capillary Beverage):  Kelly drank water from a specially designed Space Cup to demonstrate how a fluid reacts to the cup’s design. High definition video was used to capture images that will be analyzed on the ground.  Since microgravity affects fluid dynamics, in the past crew members have drunk from special sealed bags instead of using straws or normal cups. The Capillary Beverage investigation studies the process of drinking from Space Cups with different design configurations that mimic the gravitational flow of a liquid through capillary forces. VEG-01 Investigation:  Kelly reviewed on-board training for VEG-01 and installed root mats and plant pillows to initiate the VEG-01 experiment in the Veggie facility. Veggie provides the necessary lighting and nutrient delivery for efficient plant growth in space. That is not our Moon. It's Dione, and it’s a moon of Saturn. The robotic Cassini spacecraft took the featured image during a flyby of Saturn's cratered Moon last month. Perhaps what makes this image so interesting, though, is the background. First, the large orb looming behind Dione is Saturn itself, faintly lit by sunlight first reflected from the rings. Next, the thin lines running diagonally across the image are the rings of Saturn themselves. The millions of icy rocks that compose Saturn's spectacular rings all orbit Saturn in the same plane, and so appear surprisingly thin when seen nearly edge-on. Front and center, Dione appears in crescent phase, partially lit by the Sun that is off to the lower left. Toward Idealized Decision Theory. (arXiv:1507.01986v1 [cs.AI])

This paper motivates the study of decision theory as necessary for aligning smarter-than-human artificial systems with human interests. We discuss the shortcomings of two standard formulations of decision theory, and demonstrate that they cannot be used to describe an idealized decision procedure suitable for approximation by artificial systems. We then explore the notions of policy selection and logical counterfactuals, two recent insights into decision theory that point the way toward promising paths for future research.

It is now commonplace to observe that we are facing a deluge of online information. Researchers have of course long acknowledged the potential value of this information since digital traces make it possible to directly observe, describe and analyze social facts, and above all the co-evolution of ideas and communities over time. However, most online information is expressed through text, which means it is not directly usable by machines, since computers require structured, organized and typed information in order to be able to manipulate it. Our goal is thus twofold: 1. Provide new natural language processing techniques aiming at automatically extracting relevant information from texts, especially in the context of social sciences, and connect these pieces of information so as to obtain relevant socio-semantic networks; 2. Provide new ways of exploring these socio-semantic networks, thanks to tools allowing one to dynamically navigate these networks, de-construct and re-construct them interactively, from different points of view following the needs expressed by domain experts.

The Role of Pragmatics in Legal Norm Representation. (arXiv:1507.02086v1 [cs.CL])

Despite the 'apparent clarity' of a given legal provision, its application may result in an outcome that does not exactly conform to the semantic level of a statute. The vagueness within a legal text is induced intentionally to accommodate all possible scenarios under which such norms should be applied, thus making the role of pragmatics an important aspect also in the representation of a legal norm and reasoning on top of it. The notion of pragmatics considered in this paper does not focus on the aspects associated with judicial decision making. The paper aims to shed light on the aspects of pragmatics in legal linguistics, mainly focusing on the domain of patent law, only from a knowledge representation perspective. The philosophical discussions presented in this paper are grounded based on the legal theories from Grice and Marmor.

A model of human collective decision-making in complex environments. (arXiv:1507.02139v1 [cs.MA])

A continuous-time Markov process is proposed to analyze how a group of humans solves a complex task, consisting in the search of the optimal set of decisions on a fitness landscape. Individuals change their opinions driven by two different forces: (i) the rational behavior which pushes them to change their opinions as to increase their own fitness values, and (ii) the social interactions which push individuals to reduce the diversity of their opinions in order to reach consensus. Results show that the performance of the group is strongly affected by the strength of social interactions and by the level of knowledge of the individuals. Increasing the strength of social interactions improves the performance of the team. However, too strong social interactions slow down the search of the optimal solution and worsen the performance of the group. We prove that a moderate level of knowledge is already enough to guarantee high performance of the group in making decisions.

Double-Base Asymmetric AdaBoost. (arXiv:1507.02154v1 [cs.CV])

Based on the use of different exponential bases to define class-dependent error bounds, a new and highly efficient asymmetric boosting scheme, coined as AdaBoostDB (Double-Base), is proposed. Supported by a fully theoretical derivation procedure, unlike most of the other approaches in the literature, our algorithm preserves all the formal guarantees and properties of original (cost-insensitive) AdaBoost, similarly to the state-of-the-art Cost-Sensitive AdaBoost algorithm. However, the key advantage of AdaBoostDB is that our novel derivation scheme enables an extremely efficient conditional search procedure, dramatically improving and simplifying the training phase of the algorithm. Experiments, both over synthetic and real datasets, reveal that AdaBoostDB is able to save over 99% training time with regard to Cost-Sensitive AdaBoost, providing the same cost-sensitive results. This computational advantage of AdaBoostDB can make a difference in problems managing huge pools of weak classifiers in which boosting techniques are commonly used.

Generalization and Exploration via Randomized Value Functions. (arXiv:1402.0635v2 [stat.ML] UPDATED)

We propose randomized least-squares value iteration (RLSVI) -- a new reinforcement learning algorithm designed to explore and generalize efficiently via linearly parameterized value functions. We explain why versions of least-squares value iteration that use Boltzmann or $\epsilon$-greedy exploration can be highly inefficient, and we present computational results that demonstrate dramatic efficiency gains enjoyed by RLSVI. Further, we establish an upper bound on the expected regret of RLSVI that demonstrates near-optimality in a tabula rasa learning context. More broadly, our results suggest that randomized value functions offer a promising approach to tackling a critical challenge in reinforcement learning: synthesizing efficient exploration and effective generalization.

Feature-based tuning of simulated annealing applied to the curriculum-based course timetabling problem. (arXiv:1409.7186v2 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

We consider the university course timetabling problem, which is one of the most studied problems in educational timetabling. In particular, we focus our attention on the formulation known as the curriculum-based course timetabling problem, which has been tackled by many researchers and for which there are many available benchmarks.

The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we propose an effective and robust single-stage simulated annealing method for solving the problem. Secondly, we design and apply an extensive and statistically-principled methodology for the parameter tuning procedure. The outcome of this analysis is a methodology for modeling the relationship between search method parameters and instance features that allows us to set the parameters for unseen instances on the basis of a simple inspection of the instance itself. Using this methodology, our algorithm, despite its apparent simplicity, has been able to achieve high quality results on a set of popular benchmarks.

A final contribution of the paper is a novel set of real-world instances, which could be used as a benchmark for future comparison.

Ego-Object Discovery. (arXiv:1504.01639v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED)

Lifelogging devices are spreading faster everyday. This growth can represent great benefits to develop methods for extraction of meaningful information about the user wearing the device and his/her environment. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised strategy for easily discovering objects relevant to the person wearing a first-person camera. Given an egocentric video/images sequence acquired by the camera, our algorithm uses both the appearance extracted by means of a convolutional neural network and an object refill methodology that allows to discover objects even in case of small amount of object appearance in the collection of images. An SVM filtering strategy is applied to deal with the great part of the False Positive object candidates found by most of the state of the art object detectors. We validate our method on a new egocentric dataset of 4912 daily images acquired by 4 persons as well as on both PASCAL 2012 and MSRC datasets. We obtain for all of them results that largely outperform the state of the art approach. We make public both the EDUB dataset and the algorithm code.

Prediction of Radiation Fog by DNA Computing. (arXiv:1507.01731v1 [q-bio.BM])

In this paper we propose a wet lab algorithm for prediction of radiation fog by DNA computing. The concept of DNA computing is essentially exploited for generating the classifier algorithm in the wet lab. The classifier is based on a new concept of similarity based fuzzy reasoning suitable for wet lab implementation. This new concept of similarity based fuzzy reasoning is different from conventional approach to fuzzy reasoning based on similarity measure and also replaces the logical aspect of classical fuzzy reasoning by DNA chemistry. Thus, we add a new dimension to existing forms of fuzzy reasoning by bringing it down to nanoscale. We exploit the concept of massive parallelism of DNA computing by designing this new classifier in the wet lab. This newly designed classifier is very much generalized in nature and apart from prediction of radiation fog this methodology can be applied to other types of data also. To achieve our goal we first fuzzify the given observed parameters in a form of synthetic DNA sequence which is called fuzzy DNA and which handles the vague concept of human reasoning.

Tree-based Convolution for Sentence Modeling. (arXiv:1507.01839v1 [cs.CL])

In sentence modeling and classification, convolutional neural network approaches have recently achieved state-of-the-art results, but all such efforts process word vectors sequentially and neglect long-distance dependencies. To exploit both deep learning and linguistic structures, we propose a tree-based convolutional neural network model which exploit various long-distance relationships between words. Our model improves the sequential baselines on all three sentiment and question classification tasks, and achieves the highest published accuracy on TREC.

http://ift.tt/1Mcm4Ox The issue in Skype (bit hard to name it a real vulnerability) is actually a simple one - you can send links that seem to direct user to one URL, but actually send to some other. This is quite normal and expected in web pages GOOD_PLACE but it is not expected from Skype, because Skype creates these links itself and by default you can't create your own urls. If you type www.google.com, then client will generate link from that and it will point to www.google.com not to http://xkcd.com/932/ for example. What becomes important, is the fact that the link structure (which is usual HTML tag) is created not by receiving client but by the sender. So my client is not sending a simple www.google.com, but already ready link www.google.com. Usually this was not big issue, because it's bit hard to build your own stuff on Skype protocol and it might not been worth the effort. But now there exists a web client on http://web.skype.com and things are MUCH simpler on that. In web.skype.com client you can easily intercept (or write HTTP requests yourself) the request that sends your message to the server and change the href attribute inside a tag that was created automatically by javascript. ISS Daily Summary Report – 07/06/15

60 Progress (60P) Dock: 60P successfully docked to the ISS at 2:13 AM CDT Sunday. Following the docking, Padalka and Kornienko performed leak checks and disassembled the docking mechanism. They then ingressed the vehicle and began transfer operations. Habitability: Kelly used the iShort application on the iPad to document his initial feelings on the habitability of the ISS.  Habitability assesses the relationship between crew members and their environment in order to better prepare for future long-duration spaceflights to destinations, such as Near Earth Asteroids (NEA) and Mars. The ultimate goal is to understand how much habitable volume is required for vehicle internal design and layout, and if mission duration impacts the volume needed. Observations during the 1-year mission, as well as 6-month missions, can help spacecraft designers understand how much habitable volume is required, and whether a mission’s duration impacts how much space crew members need. The iShort application will enable ground support teams and human factor engineers to study and evaluate the design of the ISS and use these results for future spacecraft. Robonaut 2 (R2): Last Thursday, July 2nd, ground teams attempted to update the software on Robonaut’s three processors, referred to as the ‘brain stem’ by the Robonaut team.  Teams got one of the three processors updated but after multiple power cycles and several different lockup signatures, were not able to make further progress.  Today Kelly reviewed a Robonaut video to prepare for his upcoming activities, set up a camcorder to capture video of the Robonaut operations in the US Lab, and then unstowed, configured and powered up Robonaut.  After initial difficulties with processor lockups, Kelly removed the Robonaut external chest shell and the ground updated the software on the remaining processors.  Due to troubleshooting required, activities to power up R2’s backpack and observe subsequent mobility operations were deferred.  The root cause investigation for the prior processor lockups is ongoing.  Robonaut is a two-armed humanoid robot torso designed with the versatility and dexterity to manipulate hardware, work in high risk environments, and respond safely to unexpected obstacles. Robonaut is currently mounted inside the ISS, but in the future it will perform tasks both inside and outside the ISS. BCAT-Low Gravity Phase Kinetics Platform (KP) Intervelometer Change: Kelly changed the camera battery, transferred images to a laptop for ground controllers to downlink, and then set the D2Xs intervalometer.  The BCAT-KP experiment aims to help materials scientists develop new consumer products with unique properties and longer shelf lives.
