Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) Relocation: This morning the crew completed the Node 3 Forward vestibule outfitting. The PMM hatch was opened and the crew ingressed the PMM in its new location. While attempting to install the supply and return Intermodule Ventilation (IMV) jumpers, it was determined that the Node 3 and PMM interfaces are offset, and the vestibule jumpers from the Node 1 Nadir location did not fit. The crew scavenged and installed an offset jumper at the supply IMV location that had previously been used to support H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) at Node 2 Zenith. The HTV-5 plan does not require use of this offset jumper. This puts PMM in a good configuration for nominal operations, since the hatch provides return air exchange. Kelly deployed the updated EMER-1a and Leak Kit Instructions post-PMM relocation. Progress 58P Thruster Test: MCC-M performed a test of Progress 58P ДПО thruster #1 to troubleshoot the issue that caused the aborted Reboost on May 16. The first part of the test was performed to verify the performance of thruster #1 during a 10-second firing of that thruster alone. The second part of the test was performed to verify software performance around the time of ignition for a planned Reboost. Because the headward fluid shift is a hypothesized contributor to these changes, reversing this fluid shift with a lower body negative pressure device is investigated as a possible intervention. Results from this study may help to develop preventative measures against lasting changes in vision and eye damage. Exposed Experiment Handhold Attachment Mechanism (ExHAM) Checkout: JAXA robotic ground controllers are performing Day 2 of 3 of the checkout of Fiducial Marker, one of the payloads on the Handhold Experiment Platform (HXP) that was installed this week. Multidefender Security Games. (arXiv:1505.07548v1 [cs.GT])

Stackelberg security game models and associated computational tools have seen deployment in a number of high-consequence security settings, such as LAX canine patrols and Federal Air Marshal Service. These models focus on isolated systems with only one defender, despite being part of a more complex system with multiple players. Furthermore, many real systems such as transportation networks and the power grid exhibit interdependencies between targets and, consequently, between decision makers jointly charged with protecting them. To understand such multidefender strategic interactions present in security, we investigate game theoretic models of security games with multiple defenders. Unlike most prior analysis, we focus on the situations in which each defender must protect multiple targets, so that even a single defender's best response decision is, in general, highly non-trivial. We start with an analytical investigation of multidefender security games with independent targets, offering an equilibrium and price-of-anarchy analysis of three models with increasing generality. In all models, we find that defenders have the incentive to over-protect targets, at times significantly. Additionally, in the simpler models, we find that the price of anarchy is unbounded, linearly increasing both in the number of defenders and the number of targets per defender. Considering interdependencies among targets, we develop a novel mixed-integer linear programming formulation to compute a defender's best response, and make use of this formulation in approximating Nash equilibria of the game. We apply this approach towards computational strategic analysis of several models of networks representing interdependencies, including real-world power networks. Our analysis shows how network structure and the probability of failure spread determine the propensity of defenders to over- or under-invest in security.

Pignistic Probability Transforms for Mixes of Low- and High-Probability Events. (arXiv:1505.07751v1 [cs.AI])

In some real world information fusion situations, time critical decisions must be made with an incomplete information set. Belief function theories (e.g., Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence, Transferable Belief Model) have been shown to provide a reasonable methodology for processing or fusing the quantitative clues or information measurements that form the incomplete information set. For decision making, the pignistic (from the Latin pignus, a bet) probability transform has been shown to be a good method of using Beliefs or basic belief assignments (BBAs) to make decisions. For many systems, one need only address the most-probable elements in the set. For some critical systems, one must evaluate the risk of wrong decisions and establish safe probability thresholds for decision making. This adds a greater complexity to decision making, since one must address all elements in the set that are above the risk decision threshold. The problem is greatly simplified if most of the probabilities fall below this threshold. Finding a probability transform that properly represents mixes of low- and high-probability events is essential. This article introduces four new pignistic probability transforms with an implementation that uses the latest values of Beliefs, Plausibilities, or BBAs to improve the pignistic probability estimates. Some of them assign smaller values of probabilities for smaller values of Beliefs or BBAs than the Smets pignistic transform. They also assign higher probability values for larger values of Beliefs or BBAs than the Smets pignistic transform. These probability transforms will assign a value of probability that converges faster to the values below the risk threshold. A probability information content (PIC) variable is also introduced that assigns an information content value to any set of probability. Four operators are defined to help simplify the derivations.

As robots leave the controlled environments of factories to autonomously function in more complex, natural environments, they will have to respond to the inevitable fact that they will become damaged. However, while animals can quickly adapt to a wide variety of injuries, current robots cannot "think outside the box" to find a compensatory behavior when damaged: they are limited to their pre-specified self-sensing abilities, can diagnose only anticipated failure modes, and require a pre-programmed contingency plan for every type of potential damage, an impracticality for complex robots. Here we introduce an intelligent trial and error algorithm that allows robots to adapt to damage in less than two minutes, without requiring self-diagnosis or pre-specified contingency plans. Before deployment, a robot exploits a novel algorithm to create a detailed map of the space of high-performing behaviors: This map represents the robot's intuitions about what behaviors it can perform and their value. If the robot is damaged, it uses these intuitions to guide a trial-and-error learning algorithm that conducts intelligent experiments to rapidly discover a compensatory behavior that works in spite of the damage. Experiments reveal successful adaptations for a legged robot injured in five different ways, including damaged, broken, and missing legs, and for a robotic arm with joints broken in 14 different ways. This new technique will enable more robust, effective, autonomous robots, and suggests principles that animals may use to adapt to injury.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 05/27/15

Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) Relocation: In support of today’s PMM relocation, the crew has powered up the Centerline Berthing Camera System (CBCS) on the Node 3 Forward hatch and performed the Node 1 Nadir Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) bolt loosening and removal. Robotic Flight Controllers then unberthed PMM from Node 1 nadir at 05:00 am CDT and are currently maneuvering PMM over to Node 3 Forward for installation. Once PMM is installed, the crew pressurized and verified integrity of the Node 3 to PMM vestibule, opened the Node 3 hatch, partially removed the Center Disk Cover, and installed power and data jumpers. PMM hatch opening is scheduled for Thursday morning at ~7:45 am CDT. Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) Rope Replace: As part of routine maintenance, Virts has replaced both ARED cable arm ropes. Dynamic Surf-3: Cristoforetti is currently continuing with the Dynamic Surf-3 configuration in the Fluid Physics Experiment Facility (FPEF) housed within the Ryutai rack in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). She is verifying the internal camera configuration and settings, and will install the Infrared (IR) Data Imager and Buffer then will install the Dynamic Surf-3 (MD30) core that she configured on Monday. Later today, Virts will remove the Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF) payload bus cable and will connect the FPEF payload bus cable and Image Processing Unit (IPU) video cables. Ground controllers will perform checkouts of the Dynamic Surf-3 payload. The Dynamic Surf investigation is part of a series of JAXA experiments that Marangoni convection driven by the presence of surface tension gradient as produced by a temperature difference at a liquid/gas interface. Fluid convection observations of a silicone oil liquid bridge that is generated by heating the one disc higher than the other within the FPEF. By observing and understanding how such fluids move researchers can learn about how heat is transferred in microgravity, and ultimately drive the design and development of more efficient fluid flow based systems and devices. The objective of scientific research on Marangoni convection utilizing microgravity is to make clear the flow transition phenomena from steady to oscillatory, chaotic, and finally turbulent flows. Therefore, it is important to understand an underlying principal of Marangoni convection. The findings and knowledge obtained through the space experiment is applied to industrial processes, as well as fluid physics. Cerebral and Cochlear Fluid Pressure (CCFP) Analyzer Setup and Checkout: Kelly setup the CCFP connecting the hardware to a Human Research Facility (HRF) laptop and then will then perform a checkout and downlink the data for ground teams to evaluate prior to baseline data collections scheduled next week. The CCFP is one of the multiple pieces of hardware required for the Fluid Shifts experiment. Fluid Shifts is a joint NASA-Russian experiment that investigates the causes for severe and lasting physical changes to astronaut’s eyes. Because the headward fluid shift is a hypothesized contributor to these changes, reversing this fluid shift with a lower body negative pressure device is investigated as a possible intervention. Results from this study may help to develop preventative measures against lasting changes in vision and eye damage. Exposed Experiment Handhold Attachment Mechanism (ExHAM) Checkout: JAXA robotic ground controllers are performing Day 1 of 3 of the checkout of Fiducial Marker, one of the payloads on the Handhold Experiment Platform (HXP) that was installed this week. Controllers are utilizing the JEM Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS) and Small Fine Arm (SFA). Tonight’s activities include obtaining proximity image evaluations at 30 cm from the target, and range interaction evaluations at 40 cm and 50 cm. The ExHAM was deployed through the Airlock via Slide Table, and attached on a Handhold by JEMRMS utilizing the SFA. Array Mark is exposed for a certain period of time in space environment. Convolutional networks for real-time 6-DOF camera relocalization. (arXiv:1505.07427v1 [cs.CV])

We present a robust and real-time monocular six degree of freedom relocalization system. Our system trains a convolutional neural network to regress the 6-DOF camera pose from a single RGB image in an end-to-end manner with no need of additional engineering or graph optimisation. The algorithm can operate indoors and outdoors in real time, taking 5ms per frame to compute. It obtains approximately 2m and 3 degree accuracy for large scale outdoor scenes and 0.5m and 5 degree accuracy indoors. This is achieved using an efficient 23 layer deep convnet, demonstrating that convnets can be used to solve complicated out of image plane regression problems. This was made possible by leveraging transfer learning from large scale classification data. We show the convnet localizes from high level features and is robust to difficult lighting, motion blur and different camera intrinsics where point based SIFT registration fails. Furthermore we show how the pose feature that is produced generalizes to other scenes allowing us to regress pose with only a few dozen training examples.

Fair task allocation in transportation. (arXiv:1505.07434v1 [cs.AI])

Task allocation problems have traditionally focused on cost optimization. However, more and more attention is being given to cases in which cost should not always be the sole or major consideration. In this paper, we study a fair task allocation problem where an optimal allocation not only has low cost but more importantly, it is max-lexmin fair to all participants. To tackle this max-lexmin fair minimum cost allocation problem, we analyze and solve it in two parts. We first aim to determine the maximum number of jobs that can be feasibly done and the fairest distribution thereof. Since there may be many allocations that are considered equally fair, we then find the allocation with the minimum costs. We propose two novel polynomial-time algorithms that make use of the network flow structure of the problem to obtain the optimal solution. Furthermore, we conduct extensive experiments to investigate the trade-off between cost minimization and fairness.

Implementing feedback in creative systems: A workshop approach. (arXiv:1505.06850v1 [cs.AI])

One particular challenge in AI is the computational modelling and simulation of creativity. Feedback and learning from experience are key aspects of the creative process. Here we investigate how we could implement feedback in creative systems using a social model. From the field of creative writing we borrow the concept of a Writers Workshop as a model for learning through feedback. The Writers Workshop encourages examination, discussion and debates of a piece of creative work using a prescribed format of activities. We propose a computational model of the Writers Workshop as a roadmap for incorporation of feedback in artificial creativity systems. We argue that the Writers Workshop setting describes the anatomy of the creative process. We support our claim with a case study that describes how to implement the Writers Workshop model in a computational creativity system. We present this work using patterns other people can follow to implement similar designs in their own systems. We conclude by discussing the broader relevance of this model to other aspects of AI.

Large-scale Machine Learning for Metagenomics Sequence Classification. (arXiv:1505.06915v1 [q-bio.QM])

Metagenomics characterizes the taxonomic diversity of microbial communities by sequencing DNA directly from an environmental sample. One of the main challenges in metagenomics data analysis is the binning step, where each sequenced read is assigned to a taxonomic clade. Due to the large volume of metagenomics datasets, binning methods need fast and accurate algorithms that can operate with reasonable computing requirements. While standard alignment-based methods provide state-of-the-art performance, compositional approaches that assign a taxonomic class to a DNA read based on the k-mers it contains have the potential to provide faster solutions. In this work, we investigate the potential of modern, large-scale machine learning implementations for taxonomic affectation of next-generation sequencing reads based on their k-mers profile. We show that machine learning-based compositional approaches benefit from increasing the number of fragments sampled from reference genome to tune their parameters, up to a coverage of about 10, and from increasing the k-mer size to about 12. Tuning these models involves training a machine learning model on about 10 8 samples in 10 7 dimensions, which is out of reach of standard soft-wares but can be done efficiently with modern implementations for large-scale machine learning. The resulting models are competitive in terms of accuracy with well-established alignment tools for problems involving a small to moderate number of candidate species, and for reasonable amounts of sequencing errors. We show, however, that compositional approaches are still limited in their ability to deal with problems involving a greater number of species, and more sensitive to sequencing errors. We finally confirm that compositional approach achieve faster prediction times, with a gain of 3 to 15 times with respect to the BWA-MEM short read mapper, depending on the number of candidate species and the level of sequencing noise.

A U.S. Research Roadmap for Human Computation. (arXiv:1505.07096v1 [cs.HC])

The Web has made it possible to harness human cognition en masse to achieve new capabilities. Some of these successes are well known; for example Wikipedia has become the go-to place for basic information on all things; Duolingo engages millions of people in real-life translation of text, while simultaneously teaching them to speak foreign languages; and fold.it has enabled public-driven scientific discoveries by recasting complex biomedical challenges into popular online puzzle games. These and other early successes hint at the tremendous potential for future crowd-powered capabilities for the benefit of health, education, science, and society. In the process, a new field called Human Computation has emerged to better understand, replicate, and improve upon these successes through scientific research. Human Computation refers to the science that underlies online crowd-powered systems and was the topic of a recent visioning activity in which a representative cross-section of researchers, industry practitioners, visionaries, funding agency representatives, and policy makers came together to understand what makes crowd-powered systems successful. Teams of experts considered past, present, and future human computation systems to explore which kinds of crowd-powered systems have the greatest potential for societal impact and which kinds of research will best enable the efficient development of new crowd-powered systems to achieve this impact. This report summarize the products and findings of those activities as well as the unconventional process and activities employed by the workshop, which were informed by human computation research.

Modelling serendipity in a computational context. (arXiv:1411.0440v2 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

Most prior work that deals with serendipity in a computing context focuses on computational "discovery"; we argue that serendipity also includes an important "invention" aspect. We survey literature describing serendipitous discovery and invention in science and technology, as well as the etymology and definitions of the term serendipity. Building upon and refining previous work, we propose a model of computational serendipity that can be used to evaluate computational systems. To this end we adapt existing recommendations for evaluating computational creativity. We develop case studies that evaluate the serendipity of existing systems, and develop a thought experiment that applies our model to design a multi-agent environment for computer poetry. From our analyses, we extract recommendations for practitioners working with computational serendipity, and outline future directions for research.

Fluid Shifts Before, During and After Prolonged Space Flight and Their Association with Intracranial Pressure and Visual Impairment (Fluid Shifts): Kelly and Padalka performed a system test of the Ultrasound in the Service Module. The crew configured the ultrasound, laptop, and video, and with assistance from the ground remote guider, then performed an ultrasound scan. This test of capability is to verify capability in advance of the Fluid Shift ultrasound operations when the crew uses the Lower Body Negative Pressure (Chibis) suit next week. This week, the crew will be performing their baseline data collections in the United States On-orbit Segment (USOS). Fluid Shifts is a joint NASA-Russian experiment that investigates the causes for severe and lasting physical changes to astronaut’s eyes. Because the headward fluid shift is a hypothesized contributor to these changes, reversing this fluid shift with a lower body negative pressure device is investigated as a possible intervention. Results from this study may help to develop preventative measures against lasting changes in vision and eye damage. Marangoni Deformation 30 (Dynamic Surf-3): Cristoforetti set up the Fluid Physics Experiment Facility (FPEF) Dynamic Surf-3 core and body. She then configured the Dynamic Surf-3 cassette, installed it into the core and body. The assembly was then installed into the FPEF. Cristoforetti completed the Dynamic Surf-3 setup activities on Wednesday, with the ground checkout activities later that night. The Dynamic Surf investigation is part of a series of JAXA experiments that Marangoni convection driven by the presence of surface tension gradient as produced by a temperature difference at a liquid/gas interface. Fluid convection observations of a silicone oil liquid bridge that is generated by heating the one disc higher than the other within the Fluid Physics Experiment Facility (FPEF). By observing and understanding how such fluids move researchers can learn about how heat is transferred in microgravity, and ultimately drive the design and development of more efficient fluid flow based systems and devices. The objective of scientific research on Marangoni convection utilizing microgravity is to make clear the flow transition phenomena from steady to oscillatory, chaotic, and finally turbulent flows. Therefore, it is important to understand an underlying principal of Marangoni convection. The findings and knowledge obtained through the space experiment is applied to industrial processes, as well as fluid physics. Handhold Experiment Platform (HXP) Installation: This week the crew and ground controllers will be installing the HXP on the JEM Exposed Facility (JEF). Today, ground controllers used the JEM Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS) to retrieve the Small Fine Arm (SFA). On Tuesday, the JEM Airlock (JEMAL) outer hatch will be opened and slide table extended for the SFA to grapple the HXP and install on one of the handrails of the JEF. The HXP is composed of several exposure experiments which will remain attached to the JEF for approximately one year, collecting data on material interactions to long duration space exposure. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Loop Scrub: Virts configured EMU suits 3003 and 3010 for today’s activities. He then successfully initiated ionic and particulate filtration (scrubbing) on both suits. Later during biocidal maintenance (iodination), EMU 3010 was unable to establish sufficient cooling water flow to complete the process. Iodination maintenance was successfully performed on EMU 3003. A water sample was obtained to determine the effectiveness of the filtering. A portion of this water sample will used for a conductivity test and the remaining water will be sent to the ground for chemical analysis. Ground Teams are currently planning to perform a Fan Pump Separator change out on EMU 3010 during the first week of June. Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) Preparation: In preparation for the upcoming PMM relocation, Kelly has secured PMM Rack hardware and stowage. In addition, he gathered vestibule outfitting hardware for Node 1 Nadir and Node 3 Forward ports later in the day. SpaceX-6 Dragon Departure: Overnight, the crew disconnected both power jumpers, installed the Center Disk Cover, and closed Node 2 Nadir Hatch. They then successfully depressurized and pressure checked the Node 2/Dragon vestibule. Dragon was unberthed from the Node 2 Nadir docking port and subsequently released by the crew utilizing the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) at 6:04am CDT this morning. Dragon splashdown was in the Pacific Ocean landing zone at 11:42am CDT. The Recovery team has Dragon safely on the recovery boat and they are heading to port. Fluids Integrated Rack (FIR) Advanced Colloids Experiment (ACE)-Microscopy-3 (M3): Virts accessed the FIR Light Microscopy Module (LMM) and removed the Auxiliary Fluids Container (AFC) that housed the ACE-M3 sample. He removed the sample and using the Binary Colloidal Alloy Test (BCAT)-3 magnet mixed the samples prior to returning the sample to the LMM. ACE-M3 research involves the design and assembly of complex three-dimensional structures from small particles suspended within a fluid medium. These so-called self-assembled colloidal structures are vital to the design of advanced optical materials. In the microgravity environment, we will study the relation between particle shape, crystal symmetry and structure, a fundamental issue in condensed matter science. BCAT-Low Gravity Phase Kinetics Platform (KP) Intervelometer Change: Cristoforetti changed the camera battery, transferred images to a laptop for ground controllers to downlink, and then set the D2Xs intervalometer. The BCAT-KP experiment aims to help materials scientists develop new consumer products with unique properties and longer shelf lives. Colloids are mixtures of small particles distributed throughout a liquid, which include milk, detergents and liquid crystals. Gravity affects how the particles clump together and sink, making the International Space Station an ideal platform to study their fundamental behaviors.
