Starburst Galaxy Messier 94

Beautiful island universe Messier 94 lies a mere 15 million light-years distant in the northern constellation of the hunting dogs, Canes Venatici. A popular target for earth-based astronomers, the face-on spiral galaxy is about 30,000 light-years across, with spiral arms sweeping through the outskirts of its broad disk. But this Hubble Space Telescope field of view spans about 7,000 light-years or so across M94's central region. The sharp close-up examines the galaxy's compact, bright nucleus and prominent inner dust lanes, surrounded by a remarkable bluish ring of young, massive stars. The massive stars in the ring are all likely less than 10 million years old, indicating the galaxy experienced a well-defined era of rapid star formation. As a result, while the small, bright nucleus is typical of the Seyfert class of active galaxies, M94 is also known as a starburst galaxy. Because M94 is relatively nearby, astronomers can explore in detail reasons for the galaxy's burst of star formation. via NASA http://ift.tt/1PL9wS0

ISS Daily Summary Report – 10/22/15

NanoRack Cubesat Deployer 6 (NRCSD#6) Door Secure:  Kelly and Lindgren secured the doors of NRCSD #6 Deployer #6 inside the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Airlock with loading latches and tape to prevent an inadvertent deploy of the two cubesats in that deployer that could not be launched.   Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) Video Troubleshooting:  Yui performed additional troubleshooting steps for problems experienced during the checkout of multiple video downlinks for the CBEF.  He installed multiple video cables between the CBEF and Multi-purpose Small Payload Rack 2 (MSPR2) rack in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM).   Neuromapping:  Yui completed his Flight Day 90 NeuroMapping Neurocognitive test on a Human Research Facility (HRF) laptop.  The Neuromapping experiment studies whether long-duration spaceflight causes any changes to the brain, including brain structure and function, motor control, and multi-tasking; as well as measuring how long it takes for the brain and body to recover from those possible changes. Previous research and anecdotal evidence from crewmembers returning from a long-duration spaceflight suggests that movement control and cognition are affected in microgravity.   Microbiome Investigation:  Lindgren and Yui completed survey questionnaires as part of their Flight Day 90 session of the Microbiome investigation. Microbiome investigates the impact of space travel on both the human immune system and an individual’s microbiome (the collection of microbes that live in and on the human body at any given time).   Sleep Log:  Kelly recorded a Sleep Log entry today.  The Sleep ISS-12 experiment monitors ambient light exposure and crew member activity and collects subjective evaluations of sleep and alertness.  The investigation examines the effects of space flight and ambient light exposure on sleep during a year-long mission on the ISS.   Cognition:  Kornienko performed his Flight Day 206 session of the Cognition experiment.  This is his seventh of eleven sessions.  Individualized Real-Time Neurocognitive Assessment Toolkit for Space Flight Fatigue (Cognition) is a battery of tests that measure how spaceflight-related physical changes, such as microgravity and lack of sleep, can affect cognitive performance. Cognition includes ten brief computerized tests that cover a wide range of cognitive functions, and provides immediate feedback on current and past test results. The software allows for real-time measurement of cognitive performance while in space.   Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Mobility Unit (EMU) On-Orbit Fit Verification (OFV):  Kelly and Lindgren with assistance from Yui and Volkov conducted an EMU OFV to confirm the correct sizing of suits 3003 and 3010.  In support of today’s OFV, they recharged the EMU Feedwater Tanks and conducted communication and data checks with Mission Control Center Houston.  Kelly and Lindgren are scheduled to perform the ISS Upgrades EVA next week on Wednesday, October 28th.   Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Operations:  Last night, robotics controllers powered up the MSS and used the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) to stow the Robotics Refueling Mission (RRM) Multi-Function Tool (MFT).  The stowing of this tool was postponed following the shoulder/yaw joint invalid position anomaly experienced on October 8th on SPDM Arm 2.  The MFT stow activity was performed with Arm 2 in Degraded Joint Operations mode.   Tonight, robotics controllers will use the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and SPDM to perform an imagery survey of the RapidScat payload.  Following the survey, they will stow the SPDM, then walkoff the SSRMS to Power Data Grapple Fixture (PDGF)3 in preparation for next week’s Latching End Effector (LEE) B lube.     Today’s Planned Activities All activities were completed unless otherwise noted. Star Factory Messier 17

Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation, the star factory known as Messier 17 lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this 1/3 degree wide field of view spans over 30 light-years. The sharp composite, color image, highlights faint details of the region's gas and dust clouds against a backdrop of central Milky Way stars. Stellar winds and energetic light from hot, massive stars formed from M17 stock of cosmic gas and dust have slowly carved away at the remaining interstellar material producing the cavernous appearance and undulating shapes. M17 is also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula. via NASA http://ift.tt/1OKwXfd

Q&A with RaD-X Project Scientist, Erica Alston

This gallery was created for Earth Science Week 2015 and beyond. It includes a quick start guide for educators and first-hand stories (blogs) for learners of all ages by NASA visualizers, scientists and educators. We hope that your understanding and use of NASA's visualizations will only increase as your appreciation grows for the beauty of the science they portray, and the communicative power they hold. Read all the blogs and find educational resources for all ages at: http://ift.tt/1OKWxQV. You are the Project Scientist and Education and Public Outreach (EPO) lead for the Rad-X Project. What is Rad-X, why is it important, and what is the EPO and project scientist's role? NASA's Radiation Dosimetry Experiment, or RaD-X, is a low-cost, high-altitude balloon project. Its mission is to help us understand and quantify cosmic ray exposure at the top of atmosphere. That's the zone where commercial airlines fly. This is important because these cosmic rays are a primary source of ionizing radiation in the atmosphere and increase the risk of cancer and other health impacts. A pilot absorbs as much radiation as a worker in a nuclear power plant, yet the dose of radiation they receive during a cosmic storm or during the span of their career is not quantified or documented. The RaD-X payload consists of four radiation sensors that are used to measure incoming radiation. The RaD-X payload was launched on September 25, 2015 via a high-altitude research balloon. This supplements NASA's Nowcast of Atmospheric Ionizing Radiation for Aviation Safety (NAIRAS) model, which helps us make informed decisions about radiation exposure safety for flight crews, the general public, and commercial space operations. RaD-X also supported Cubes in Space on their inaugural balloon flight, which carried various science projects from schools across the U.S. Cubes in Space is a global design contest in which teams of secondary school students from around the world develop unique science experiments for launch into the upper atmosphere. During the 24-hour mission, the RaD-X payload and Cubes in Space experienced altitudes above 100,000 ft. during the day and above 60,000 ft. during the night. On RaD-X, I had dual roles. First as the Project Scientist it was my job to serve as an interface between the scientists and engineers. Essentially, to help them speak the same language and communicate effectively. I was also the EPO lead. This included coordinating school visits, developing fact sheets, and interfacing with NASA Langley Research Center's public affairs and communications. How do you use Earth visualizations? Does it have applications to the Rad-X project? Using data from the NAIRAS model, we create visualizations of predicted radiation exposure at multiple altitudes. These show exposure rates at aircraft levels and a vertical profile on global exposure rates. Now that we have successfully launched the Rad-X mission, we have started to analyze real data. During the launch we monitored (in real-time) how the measurements compared with the model predicted values from NAIRAS. Creating visualizations in real-time made the comparisons easier to interpret. How important is communication in your job as a scientist? Do you ever use visualizations to communicate your research? Communication is absolutely key in conveying the importance of the mission and my work. I have to be able to clearly describe complex ideas in a meaningful way and when I see the audience nod in understanding, it is very satisfying. NASA's work is so important; we need to show how the investments the government makes in science are essential to improving the world around us. Using visualizations is vital to clear communication. It is sometimes more effective to show people what the data says, rather than tell them what the data says. For instance in the case of RaD-X, what if I told you there was a strong solar storm that affected our upper atmosphere to the point where the north and south poles had high radiation exposure levels. Would that mean anything to you? But, if I used a visualization that showed how an increased exposure level changed over time or how the storm affects exposure levels for a flight route over the poles, then it would make sense. The picture conveys so much more without the need for a lot of words. What's your favorite part about your job? My favorite part is communication. My work contributes a small part to the understanding of our natural world. So communicating how my research intersects with everyday life is utterly rewarding. Sharing my work with a variety of people nurtures my desire to continue working hard. It's a wonderful positive feedback loop! When you were a student, what interest/hobby led you to the work you're doing now? In college, you would have thought I was a drama or theater major instead of science, because I was interested in different ways to express myself. It was learning how to express myself that has served me well in my current career. I love to talk and share with people. I am comfortable with communicating to a variety of audiences, and I owe that to my varied interests when I was younger. What suggestions/advice do you have to get young girls more interested in science and engineering? My advice is the same advice my mama gave me growing up, which I'll summarize as "Life's journey is full of highs and lows, rewards and challenges. It is perseverance and belief in you and your abilities that will see you through. Knowing your worth and fully believing in it, will allow you to visualize you doing exactly what you were meant to do." And to my under-represented young girls in science, use your talents and passions to pursue your calling. Know that in doing so, you are role models and are laying the foundation for those who will come after you. Do not be afraid to be great. -- Erica Alston, Research Scientist NASA Langley Research Center

Generalized Shortest Path Kernel on Graphs. (arXiv:1510.06492v1 [cs.AI])

We consider the problem of classifying graphs using graph kernels. We define a new graph kernel, called the generalized shortest path kernel, based on the number and length of shortest paths between nodes. For our example classification problem, we consider the task of classifying random graphs from two well-known families, by the number of clusters they contain. We verify empirically that the generalized shortest path kernel outperforms the original shortest path kernel on a number of datasets. We give a theoretical analysis for explaining our experimental results. In particular, we estimate distributions of the expected feature vectors for the shortest path kernel and the generalized shortest path kernel, and we show some evidence explaining why our graph kernel outperforms the shortest path kernel for our graph classification problem.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 10/21/15

NanoRack Cubesat Deployer 6 (NRCSD#6) Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Airlock Operations:  Kelly pressurized the JEM Airlock and performed a leak check today in preparation for the activity planned for tomorrow to safe the door on Deployer #6, which contains two cubesats that were not able to be launched.   Tropical Cyclone:  Yui set up a camera in a Cupola window, pointing perpendicular to the ISS velocity vector, with the horizon in view.  The Tropical Cyclone investigation is used to capture images of tropical cyclones and hurricanes that are rated at Category 3 or greater on the Saffir-Simpson scale.  Images will be taken of Cyclone Olaf, which was rated as a Category 4 cyclone as of October 20th.  A pseudo-stereoscopic method is used to determine the altitudes of the cloud tops near the center (eye) of a cyclone by precisely tracking the apparent positions of cloud features with respect to the Earth and how those positions change over time as an observer (the ISS in this case) passes over the storm.  The photographic images will be used to demonstrate that pseudo-spectroscopy can be used to measure the cloud altitudes to sufficient precision so that, when combined with other remote-sensing data, an accurate determination of the intensity of hurricane or cyclone can be made.   Sound Level Measurements in the Mouse Habitat Unit (MHU):  Yui installed the MHU Interface in the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) and then placed two Acoustic Dosimeters inside the CBEF to provide static sound level measurements.  These measurements will provide an indication of the sound levels that mice in the MHU will be exposed to during JAXA’s Mouse Epigenetics experiment, which will be performed after the mice arrive on a visiting vehicle in the future.  These measurements differ from previous sound level measurements with a Sound Level Meter in that the dosimeters are stand alone, allowing the MHU doors to be closed and operation of the CBEF and Avionics Air Assembly (AAA) fans.   Ocular Health Ocular and Cardiac Ultrasounds:  Lindgren assisted Kelly and Kornienko today in performing blood pressure measurements and ocular and cardiac ultrasounds as part of their series of Flight Day 210 Ocular Health tests.   The ultrasound images will be used to identify changes in globe morphology and document optic nerve sheath diameter, optic nerve sheath tortuosity, globe axial measurements, and choroidal engorgement. The Ocular Health protocol calls for a systematic gathering of physiological data to characterize the risk of microgravity-induced visual impairment/intracranial pressure in ISS crewmembers. Researchers believe that the measurement of visual, vascular and central nervous system changes over the course of this experiment and during the subsequent post-flight recovery will assist in the development of countermeasures, clinical monitoring strategies, and clinical practice guidelines. Large Format Motion Picture Camera (IMAX):  Yui connected the IMAX Codex to a Station Support Computer (SSC) for a downlink of recorded video files.  IMAX filmmakers intend to produce a three dimensional movie called A Perfect Planet, using ISS-based video and images to show how natural and human forces shape planet Earth. The Fractured North Pole of Saturns Enceladus

The north pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus is unexpectedly fascinating and complex. Previous to the latest flyby of the robotic Cassini spacecraft, the northern region was known mostly for its unusually high abundance of craters. Last week's flyby, however, returned images of unprecedented detail, including the featured image showing the expected craters coupled with an unexpected and circuitous pattern of picturesque cracks and fractures. Broken terrain has been recorded at lower latitudes, with deep canyons dubbed Tiger Stripes near Enceladus' South Pole. The fractures may further indicate global interplay between the surface and potential seas underneath, seas that future missions might target for signs of life. via NASA http://ift.tt/1LL60Fu

High Performance Latent Variable Models. (arXiv:1510.06143v1 [cs.LG])

Latent variable models have accumulated a considerable amount of interest from the industry and academia for their versatility in a wide range of applications. A large amount of effort has been made to develop systems that is able to extend the systems to a large scale, in the hope to make use of them on industry scale data. In this paper, we describe a system that operates at a scale orders of magnitude higher than previous works, and an order of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art system at the same scale, at the same time showing more robustness and more accurate results.

Our system uses a number of advances in distributed inference: high performance in synchronization of sufficient statistics with relaxed consistency model; fast sampling, using the Metropolis-Hastings-Walker method to overcome dense generative models; statistical modeling, moving beyond Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to Pitman-Yor distributions (PDP) and Hierarchical Dirichlet Process (HDP) models; sophisticated parameter projection schemes, to resolve the conflicts within the constraint between parameters arising from the relaxed consistency model.

This work significantly extends the domain of applicability of what is commonly known as the Parameter Server. We obtain results with up to hundreds billion oftokens, thousands of topics, and a vocabulary of a few million token-types, using up to 60,000 processor cores operating on a production cluster of a large Internet company. This demonstrates the feasibility to scale to problems orders of magnitude larger than any previously published work.

Creating Scalable and Interactive Web Applications Using High Performance Latent Variable Models. (arXiv:1510.06153v1 [cs.AI])

In this project we outline a modularized, scalable system for comparing Amazon products in an interactive and informative way using efficient latent variable models and dynamic visualization. We demonstrate how our system can build on the structure and rich review information of Amazon products in order to provide a fast, multifaceted, and intuitive comparison. By providing a condensed per-topic comparison visualization to the user, we are able to display aggregate information from the entire set of reviews while providing an interface that is at least as compact as the "most helpful reviews" currently displayed by Amazon, yet far more informative.

Time-Sensitive Bayesian Information Aggregation for Crowdsourcing Systems. (arXiv:1510.06335v1 [cs.AI])

Crowdsourcing systems commonly face the problem of aggregating multiple judgments provided by possibly unreliable workers. In addition, several aspects of the design of efficient crowdsourcing processes, such as defining worker's bonuses, fair prices and time limits of the tasks, involve the knowledge of the actual duration of a specific task. In this work, we introduce a new time{sensitive Bayesian aggregation method that simultaneously estimates a task's duration and obtains reliable aggregations of crowdsourced judgments. Our method builds on the key insight that the time taken by a worker to perform a task is an important indicator of the likely quality of the produced judgment. To capture this, our model uses latent variables to represent the uncertainty about the workers' completion time, the tasks' duration and the workers' accuracy. To relate the quality of a judgment to the time a worker spends on a task, our model assumes that each task is completed within a latent time window within which all workers with a propensity to valid labelling are expected to submit their judgments. In contrast, workers with a lower propensity to valid labelling, such as spammers, bots or lazy labellers, are assumed to perform tasks considerably faster or slower than the time required by normal workers. Specifically, we use efficient message- passing Bayesian inference to learn approximate posterior probabilities of (i) the confusion matrix of each worker, (ii) the propensity to valid labelling of each worker, (iii) the unbiased duration of each task and (iv) the true label of each task. Using two real-world public datasets for entity linking tasks, we show that our method produces up to 15% more accurate classifications and up to 100% more informative estimates of a task's duration compared to state{of{the{art methods.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 10/20/15

Observation Analysis of Smectic Islands in Space (OASIS) Sample Exchange:  Kononenko performed an OASIS sample exchange today, installing the third of four sample cartridges into the experiment hardware housed in the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG).  OASIS studies the unique behavior of liquid crystals in microgravity, including their overall motion and the merging of crystal layers known as smectic islands. Liquid crystals are used for display screens in televisions and clocks, and they also occur in soaps and in cell membranes. The experiment allows detailed studies of the behavior of these structures, and how microgravity affects their unique ability to act like both a liquid and a solid crystal. NanoRack Cubesat Deployer 6 (NRCSD#6) Latch Inspection and Return to the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Airlock:  Kelly obtained photographs for verification of the Cubesat Quad Deployers secondary latch positions.  He then opened the Airlock outer hatch, extended the Slide Table out of the Airlock, and monitored the soft dock of the Multi-Purpose Experiment Platform with the NRCSD attached to it to the slide table by the JEM Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS).  Later, he retracted the slide table into the Airlock and closed the outer hatch.  Tomorrow, Kelly will pressurize the Airlock and perform a leak check prior to safing the door on Deployer #6, which contains two cubesats that were not able to be launched.   Plant Gravity Sensing 2 (PGS2) Run 1 Closeout:  Yui closed out Plant Gravity Sensing 2 Run1 today.  He removed culture dishes from the Photon Counting Units in the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) Incubator Unit and stowed the PGS2 hardware.   Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Preparation:  Yui configured Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) suits 3003 and 3010 for loop scrubbing.  Samples containing 250 mL of the water were obtained after the loop scrub activity to determine the effectiveness of the filtering.  10 mL of this water sample was used for a conductivity test and the remaining water will be sent to the ground for chemical analysis.  Yui then reconfigured Loop Scrub hardware for Iodination of Ion Filters on both suits.  As part of a separate activity, Lindgren utilized the EMU Caution & Warning System (ECWS) Trainer to review operations of the EMU Enhanced Caution and Warning System and practiced EVA Cuff Checklist procedures.  Later in the day, Kelly and Lindgren worked together and configured EVA tools needed for upcoming ISS Upgrades EVA, scheduled for October 28th.   X2R14 Software Transition:   Flight Controllers continue to update Multiplexer/Demultiplexers (MDMs) with the latest software suite.  Today, they successfully loaded the LSYS3 R6 software onto the LAB-3 MDM and the N2SYS2 R4 software onto the Node 2-2 MDM.  X2R14 software transition activities will continue through Wednesday afternoon.   Possible Conjunction with Object # 39861 (SL-16 Debris):  Ground teams are evaluating tracking data for a possible conjunction with object # 39861. The time of closest approach is Wednesday, Wednesday, October 21 at 6:01 PM CDT. Concern level on the item is currently medium and teams are evaluating the potential for a Pre-Determined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM).   Urine Processing Assembly (UPA) Fault:  Overnight, the Urine Processing Assembly (UPA) faulted during a reprocess cycle.  The error code indicated an issue with the Fluids Control and Pump Assembly (FCPA).  This morning ground teams attempted to re-activate UPA but were not successful.  The UPA faulted to the same failure indications.  This FCPA has operated for about 1065 hours and is beyond the on-orbit Mean Time between Failure (MBTF) of 600 hours. Currently there are two spare FCPAs on-orbit with an additional spare arriving onboard Orbital  4.  Teams will continue to review the data and develop a forward plan.   Today’s Planned Activities All activities were completed unless otherwise noted. [FD] [SE-2014-02] Google App Engine Java security sandbox bypasses (Issue 42)

Hello All, Oracle Critical Patch Update released yesterday incorporates a fix for a Java SE 7 vulnerability (Issue 42) that was discovered while investigating security of Google App Engine. Its technical details and a POC code can be found at the following address: http://ift.tt/1ALgNG6 Issue 42 is caused by improper initialization of interface method slots in a HotSpot VM. As a result, protected instance methods can be successfully used as interface methods. This violates the Java Virtual Machine Language Specification [1], which states that "if the selected method is not public, invokeinterface should throw an IllegalAccessError". GAE weakens standard Java security model by allowing custom Class Loaders. In order to protect against direct exploitation of this "feature", access to defineClass methods of java.lang.ClassLoader class and it subclasses is restricted in Google environment [2]. Issue 42 can be used to directly invoke such methods with the use of interfaces. As a result, user provided classes can be defined outside of a GAE Class Sweeper sandbox and Java security manager can be completely turned off. It's also worth to note that in Mar 2015, Google indicated that it "has other mitigations in place that prevent Issue 21 [1+ years old JRE with 100+ unpatched security vulnerabilities] from being exploitable". This is the second time we show these mitigations are not working as intended [3]. What is however more interesting is that rather mediocre Java SE issue can be successfully exploited in a straightforward way in GAE environment, just because Google has chosen to "tweak" a standard Java security model a little bit. Thank you. Best Regards, Adam Gowdiak

2017 Eclipse: Earth, Moon and Sun

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, casting its shadow on the Earth. The shadow comprises two concentric cones called the umbra and the penumbra. Observers on the Earth who are within the smaller, central umbra see the Sun completely blocked. Within the larger penumbra, the Sun is only partially blocked. In this animation, the Earth, Moon, Sun, and shadow cones are viewed through a telescopic lens on a virtual camera located far behind the Earth. Long focal lengths like the one used here appear to compress the distance between near and far objects. Despite appearances, the geometry of the scene is correct. The Moon's umbra cone is roughly 30 Earth diameters long, barely enough to reach the Earth, while the Sun is almost 400 times farther away. From this perspective, we see the night sides of both the Earth and the Moon. Solar eclipses can only occur during New Moon, when the entire Earth-facing side of the Moon is experiencing nighttime darkness.

Fact Checking in Large Knowledge Graphs - A Discriminative Predicate Path Mining Approach. (arXiv:1510.05911v1 [cs.DB])

Traditional fact checking by experts and analysts cannot keep pace with the volume of newly created information. It is important and necessary, therefore, to enhance our ability to computationally determine whether some statement of fact is true or false. We view this problem as a link-prediction task in a knowledge graph, and show that a new model of the top discriminative predicate paths is able to understand the meaning of some statement and accurately determine its veracity. We evaluate our approach by examining thousands of claims related to history, geography, biology, and politics using a public, million node knowledge graph extracted from Wikipedia and PubMedDB. Not only does our approach significantly outperform related models, we also find that the discriminative predicate path model is easily interpretable and provides sensible reasons for the final determination.

Semantic, Cognitive, and Perceptual Computing: Advances toward Computing for Human Experience. (arXiv:1510.05963v1 [cs.AI])

The World Wide Web continues to evolve and serve as the infrastructure for carrying massive amounts of multimodal and multisensory observations. These observations capture various situations pertinent to people's needs and interests along with all their idiosyncrasies. To support human-centered computing that empower people in making better and timely decisions, we look towards computation that is inspired by human perception and cognition. Toward this goal, we discuss computing paradigms of semantic computing, cognitive computing, and an emerging aspect of computing, which we call perceptual computing. In our view, these offer a continuum to make the most out of vast, growing, and diverse data pertinent to human needs and interests. We propose details of perceptual computing characterized by interpretation and exploration operations comparable to the interleaving of bottom and top brain processing.

This article consists of two parts. First we describe semantic computing, cognitive computing, and perceptual computing to lay out distinctions while acknowledging their complementary capabilities. We then provide a conceptual overview of the newest of these three paradigms--perceptual computing. For further insights, we focus on an application scenario of asthma management converting massive, heterogeneous and multimodal (big) data into actionable information or smart data.

Improved Answer-Set Programming Encodings for Abstract Argumentation. (arXiv:1507.06689v2 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

The design of efficient solutions for abstract argumentation problems is a crucial step towards advanced argumentation systems. One of the most prominent approaches in the literature is to use Answer-Set Programming (ASP) for this endeavor. In this paper, we present new encodings for three prominent argumentation semantics using the concept of conditional literals in disjunctions as provided by the ASP-system clingo. Our new encodings are not only more succinct than previous versions, but also outperform them on standard benchmarks.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 10/19/15

Ocular Health:  One year crewmembers Kelly and Kornienko initiated their Flight Day 210 Ocular Health testing by completing vision and tonometry tests and taking blood pressure measurements with the assistance of Yui. Story Time from Space: Yui recorded a reading from “Max Goes to the Space Station” today.  The recording will be downlinked to the ground and used for educational purposes.   Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Review:  Today Kelly, Lindgren, and Yui reviewed a briefing package associated with the upcoming ISS Upgrades EVA.  Among the items reviewed is the EVA detailed timeline, EVA tasks, safety tether plan, translations paths, photo requirements, and hand signals.  The ISS Upgrades EVA is scheduled to occur on October 28, 2015.   ISS Emergency Drill:  All six crewmembers participated in an ISS emergency drill and debrief.  The crew used an onboard simulator to guide their responses during two separate simulations (Rapid Depress and Fire). The purpose of this training is to practice ISS emergency responses based on information provided by the simulator. The crew physically translates through ISS to appropriate locations in order to visualize the use of station equipment and interfaces. They also practice procedure execution and associated decision making, all while exercising communication skills with MCC-H and MCC-M.   X2R14 Software Transition:  On Sunday, Flight Controllers successfully loaded Command and Control System (CCS) R14 software onto 2 of 3 C&C Multiplexer/Demultiplexer (MDM) and performed an MDM transition in order to utilize the new software on the Primary C&C MDM.  Lindgren then powered on and connected Portable Computer Systems (PCS) loaded with new PCS R17 software.  Today, Flight Controllers continued with the X2R14 software transition by loading Hub Control Zone (HCZ) R4 to both HCZ MDMs in Node 3 and loaded the 3rd C&C MDM with CCS R14.   Node 3 Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA):  On Saturday, Node 3 CDRA experienced a fault on its Heater Controller B.  As a result, Flight Controllers activated the Lab CDRA.  After some troubleshooting which involved isolating the fault to the secondary heater string, flight controllers masked the associated Passive Built In Test (PBIT) and activated the Node 3 CDRA using the single string of heaters.  Later, the Node 3 CDRA was commanded to standby in preparation for the HCZ software transition today.   Today’s Planned Activities All activities are on schedule unless otherwise noted. The Southern Cross in a Southern Sky

Have you ever seen the Southern Cross? This famous constellation is best seen from Earth's Southern Hemisphere. Captured from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the four bright stars that mark the Southern Cross are visible just above the horizon in the featured image. On the left of this constellation, also known as The Crux, is the orange star Gamma Crucis. The band of stars, dust, and gas rising through the middle of the image mosaic is part our Milky Way Galaxy. Just to the right of the Southern Cross is the dark Coal Sack Nebula, and the bright nebula at the top of the image is the Carina Nebula. The Southern Cross is such a famous constellation that it is depicted on the national flags of Australia and New Zealand. via NASA http://ift.tt/1XeQ2Y5

Causal Falling Rule Lists. (arXiv:1510.05189v1 [cs.AI])

A causal falling rule list (CFRL) is a sequence of if-then rules that specifies heterogeneous treatment effects, where (i) the order of rules determines the treatment effect subgroup a subject belongs to, and (ii) the treatment effect decreases monotonically down the list. A given CFRL parameterizes a hierarchical bayesian regression model in which the treatment effects are incorporated as parameters, and assumed constant within model-specific subgroups. We formulate the search for the CFRL best supported by the data as a Bayesian model selection problem, where we perform a search over the space of CFRL models, and approximate the evidence for a given CFRL model using standard variational techniques. We apply CFRL to a census wage dataset to identify subgroups of differing wage inequalities between men and women.

On the Computability of AIXI. (arXiv:1510.05572v1 [cs.AI])

How could we solve the machine learning and the artificial intelligence problem if we had infinite computation? Solomonoff induction and the reinforcement learning agent AIXI are proposed answers to this question. Both are known to be incomputable. In this paper, we quantify this using the arithmetical hierarchy, and prove upper and corresponding lower bounds for incomputability. We show that AIXI is not limit computable, thus it cannot be approximated using finite computation. Our main result is a limit-computable {\epsilon}-optimal version of AIXI with infinite horizon that maximizes expected rewards.

PERCH: Perception via Search for Multi-Object Recognition and Localization. (arXiv:1510.05613v1 [cs.CV])

In many robotic domains such as flexible automated manufacturing or personal assistance, a fundamental perception task is that of identifying and localizing objects whose 3D models are known. Canonical approaches to this problem include discriminative methods that find correspondences between feature descriptors computed over the model and observed data. While these methods have been employed successfully, they can be unreliable when the feature descriptors cannot capture variations in observed data: a classic example being occlusion. As a step towards deliberative reasoning, we present PERCH: PErception via SeaRCH, an algorithm that seeks to find the best explanation of the observed sensor data by hypothesizing possible scenes in a generative fashion. Our contributions are: i) formulating the multi-object recognition and localization task as an optimization problem over the space of hypothesized scenes, ii) exploiting structure in the optimization to cast it as a combinatorial search problem on what we call the Monotone Scene Generation Tree, and iii) leveraging parallelization and recent advances in multi-heuristic search in making combinatorial search tractable. We prove that our system can guaranteeably produce the best explanation of the scene under the chosen cost function, and validate our claims on real world RGB-D test data. Our experimental results show that we can identify and localize objects under heavy occlusion--cases where state-of-the-art methods struggle.

The Limitations of Standardized Science Tests as Benchmarks for Artificial Intelligence Research: Position Paper. (arXiv:1411.1629v2 [cs.AI] UPDATED)

In this position paper, I argue that standardized tests for elementary science such as SAT or Regents tests are not very good benchmarks for measuring the progress of artificial intelligence systems in understanding basic science. The primary problem is that these tests are designed to test aspects of knowledge and ability that are challenging for people; the aspects that are challenging for AI systems are very different. In particular, standardized tests do not test knowledge that is obvious for people; none of this knowledge can be assumed in AI systems. Individual standardized tests also have specific features that are not necessarily appropriate for an AI benchmark. I analyze the Physics subject SAT in some detail and the New York State Regents Science test more briefly. I also argue that the apparent advantages offered by using standardized tests are mostly either minor or illusory. The one major real advantage is that the significance is easily explained to the public; but I argue that even this is a somewhat mixed blessing. I conclude by arguing that, first, more appropriate collections of exam style problems could be assembled, and second, that there are better kinds of benchmarks than exam-style problems. In an appendix I present a collection of sample exam-style problems that test kinds of knowledge missing from the standardized tests.

On the Computability of Solomonoff Induction and Knowledge-Seeking. (arXiv:1507.04124v1 [cs.AI] CROSS LISTED)

Solomonoff induction is held as a gold standard for learning, but it is known to be incomputable. We quantify its incomputability by placing various flavors of Solomonoff's prior M in the arithmetical hierarchy. We also derive computability bounds for knowledge-seeking agents, and give a limit-computable weakly asymptotically optimal reinforcement learning agent.

Re: [FD] WinRAR SFX v5.21 - Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

[FD] Seagate Central NAS vulnerabilities

I have contacted Seagate regarding the following and was twice informed of a 90-day window for disclosure. I followed up to no response and have decided, following the culmination of those 90-days, to publish. The fact that embedded devices are vulnerable is not new. This is really not newsworthy, but perhaps we can aim higher? The Central NAS is not Seagate’s most popular model, but it does share code with other, more popular products such as the BlackArmor range. Vulnerabilities: - Web application allows unauthorized modification of IP address and hostname. - World-writable system files allow local users to compromise configuration and perform local privilege escalation. (I’ve been informed an updated firmware patch “somewhat” mitigates this, but is unconfirmed) - Common root password is set on all devices and /etc/shadow is world-readable. - Firmware updates are vulnerable to a MITM attack. These are performed over plain HTTP and are not signed, allowing attackers to readily deliver malicious payloads. - The NAS supports multi-user / multi-tenant operation. The files of these users are all set, by default, to mode 777. Users are given SSH access and may readily access and modify each other’s files. - The device exposes a phpinfo() page to unauthorized users (information disclosure). These issues were really low-hanging-fruit. I’m certain a number of remaining issues have yet to be discovered here, but for myself, I’m done. Finally, see the following blog post for more detail and a timeline of communications with the vendor:
