A mere 2.5 million light-years away the Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, really is just next door as large galaxies go. So close and spanning some 260,000 light-years, it took 11 different image fields from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite's telescope to produce this gorgeous portrait of the spiral galaxy in ultraviolet light. While its spiral arms stand out in visible light images of Andromeda, the arms look more like rings in the GALEX ultraviolet view, a view dominated by the energetic light from hot, young, massive stars. As sites of intense star formation, the rings have been interpreted as evidence Andromeda collided with its smaller neighboring elliptical galaxy M32 more than 200 million years ago. Comet PanSTARRS, Moon, and Venus

It is the object to the left of the big tree that's generating much recent excitement. If you look closely, there you can see Comet PanSTARRS, complete with two tails. During July, this comet has increased markedly in brightness and has just passed its closest approach to Earth. The statuesque tree in the center is a Norfolk Island Pine, and to either side of this tree are New Zealand Pohutukaw trees. Over the trees, far in the distance, are bright Venus and an even brighter crescent Moon. If you look even more closely, you can find Jupiter hidden in the branches of the pine. The featured image was taken a few days ago in Fergusson Park, New Zealand, looking over Tauranga Harbour Inlet. Learning Weak Constraints in Answer Set Programming. (arXiv:1507.06566v1 [cs.AI])

This paper contributes to the area of inductive logic programming by presenting a new learning framework that allows the learning of weak constraints in Answer Set Programming (ASP). The framework, called Learning from Ordered Answer Sets, generalises our previous work on learning ASP programs without weak constraints, by considering a new notion of examples as ordered pairs of partial answer sets that exemplify which answer sets of a learned hypothesis (together with a given background knowledge) are preferred to others. In this new learning task inductive solutions are searched within a hypothesis space of normal rules, choice rules, and hard and weak constraints. We propose a new algorithm, ILASP2, which is sound and complete with respect to our new learning framework. We investigate its applicability to learning preferences in an interview scheduling problem and also demonstrate that when restricted to the task of learning ASP programs without weak constraints, ILASP2 can be much more efficient than our previously proposed system.

43 Soyuz (43S) Launch/Dock: 43S launched at 4:02 PM CDT today and docked at 9:46 PM CDT. Hatch opening occurred at 11:56 PM CDT. With the arrival of Kjell Lindgren, Kimiya Yui and Oleg Kononenko the ISS returns to 6-crew operations. Following crew ingress, the ISS Safety Briefing will be performed to familiarizes the newly arrived crew with potential hazards and safety measures. The crew will also review emergency actions, roles and responsibilities and response to depressurization, fire and toxic events. Fine Motor Skills: Kelly and Kornienko performed their Flight Day 120 session of Fine Motor Skills today. In this experiment crew members perform a series of interactive tasks on a touchscreen tablet. The investigation is the first fine motor skills study to measure long-term microgravity exposure, different phases of microgravity adaptation, and sensorimotor recovery after returning to Earth’s gravity. The goal of the experiment is to answer how fine motor performance in microgravity trend/vary over the duration of a six-month and year-long space mission; how fine motor performance on orbit compare with that of a closely matched participant on Earth; and how performance trend/vary before and after gravitational transitions, including the periods of early flight adaptation and very early/near immediate post-flight periods. Space Headaches: Yui and Lindgren will perform their first Space Headaches questionnaire following their arrival on ISS. They will complete the questionnaire daily for their first week on orbit then once per week for the remainder of their mission. Headaches can be a common complaint during spaceflight. The Space Headaches experiment improves the understanding of such conditions which helps in the development of methods to alleviate associated symptoms and improve the well-being and performance of crew members in orbit. This can also improve the knowledge of similar conditions on Earth. GRACE consists of twin co-orbiting satellites that fly in a near polar orbit separated by a distance of 220 km. GRACE precisely measures the distance between the two spacecraft in order to make detailed measurements of the Earth's gravitational field. Since its launch in 2002, GRACE has provided a continuous record of changes in the mass of the Earth's ice sheets. This animations shows the change in the the Greenland Ice Sheet between January 2004 and June 2014. The 1-arc-deg NASA GSFC mascon solution data was resampled to a 998 x 1800 data array using Kriging interpolation. A color scale was applied in the range of +250 to -250 centimeters of equivalent water height, where blue values indicate an increase in the ice sheet mass while red shades indicate a decrease. In addition, the running sum total of the accumulated mass change over the Greenland Ice Sheet is shown on a graph overlay in gigatons.

Impact of Snow Darkening on Boreal Spring Climate

A recent study by Yasunari et al. (2015) discussed the impact of the light-absorbing aerosol (LAA) depositions on snowpack such as dust, black carbon, and organic carbon on boreal spring climate. They used the 10-year period of 2002-2011 and 10-ensemble NASA GEOS-5 global simulations implemented with the GOddard SnoW Impurity Module (GOSWIM) in order to evaluate the LAA impacts on seasonal snowpack over land in spring.* The LAA impacts on snow is known as the "snow darkening effect" (SDE). Yasunari et al. computed the differences in the 100-year-data mean, called the ensemble mean climatology, with and without SDE cases to determine the impact of SDE on boreal spring climate. Figure 1b shows the SDE impact on snow water equivalent (i.e. snow amount converted to water amount) changes in spring. They also pointed out that the existence of SDE can induce the land surface heating over 15 W m-2 near the snowline by the mean increases of the net shortwave flux (Figure 1c). The heated areas can increase the surface skin temperature by about 3-6 K (see Figure 1d in the original paper). * March-May

Adapting Stochastic Search For Real-time Dynamic Weighted Constraint Satisfaction. (arXiv:1507.06045v1 [cs.AI])

This work presents two new algorithms for performing constraint satisfaction. The first algorithm presented, DMaxWalkSat, is a constraint solver specialized for solving dynamic, weighted constraint satisfaction problems. The second algorithm, RDMaxWalkSat, is a derivative of DMaxWalkSat that has been modified into an anytime algorithm, and hence support realtime constraint satisfaction. DMaxWalkSat is shown to offer performance advantages in terms of solution quality and runtime over its parent constraint solver, MaxWalkSat. RDMaxWalkSat is shown to support anytime operation. The introduction of these algorithms brings another tool to the areas of computer science that naturally represent problems as constraint satisfaction problems, an example of which is the robust coherence algorithm.

Taming Primary Key Violations to Query Large Inconsistent Data. (arXiv:1507.06103v1 [cs.AI])

Consistent query answering over a database that violates primary key constraints is a classical hard problem in database research that has been traditionally dealt with logic programming. However, the applicability of existing logic-based solutions is restricted to data sets of moderate size. This paper presents a novel decomposition and pruning strategy that reduces, in polynomial time, the problem of computing the consistent answer to a conjunctive query over a database subject to primary key constraints to a collection of smaller problems of the same sort that can be solved independently. The new strategy is naturally modeled and implemented using Answer Set Programming (ASP). An experiment run on benchmarks from the database world prove the effectiveness and efficiency of our ASP-based approach also on large data sets. ISS Daily Summary Report – 07/21/15

Integrated Resistance and Aerobic Training Study (Sprint) Ultrasound: Kelly, with Padalka assisting, configured video, Ultrasound 2 machine, and donned the calf and thigh reference guides for his Flight Day 120 Sprint Ultrasound. Kelly then performed thigh and calf scans with guidance from the Sprint ground team. Ultrasound scans are used to evaluate spaceflight-induced changes in the muscle volume. The investigation evaluates the use of high intensity, low volume exercise training to minimize loss of muscle, bone, and cardiovascular function in ISS crewmembers during long-duration missions. Upon completion of this study, investigators expect to provide an integrated resistance and aerobic exercise training protocol capable of maintaining muscle, bone and cardiovascular health while reducing total exercise time over the course of a long-duration space flight. This will provide valuable information in support of investigator’s long term goal of protecting human fitness for even longer space exploration missions. JEM Airlock (JEMAL) Operations: Kelly repressed and leak checked the JEMAL following the successful completion of the NanoRack Cubesat Deployer-5 (NRCSD5) operations. Radiation Dosimetry Inside ISS-Neutrons (Radi-N): Kelly retrieved the deployed eight bubble detectors for Radi-N and handed them over to Kornienko to log the data. The objective of this investigation is to better characterize the ISS neutron environment and define the risk posed to the crewmembers’ health and provide the data necessary to develop advanced protective measures for future space flight. For each session, 8 detectors are initialized and deployed in predetermined locations for measurements: a set of 6 spectrometric detectors and two control detectors are placed on a wall of an ISS Segment. After 7 days the detectors are collected and read using the BUBBLE reader. Node 3 Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) Leak Check Status: Yesterday, Kelly located a likely source of the leak in N3 CDRA during the inspection with Ultrasonic Leak Detector (ULD). This leak was discovered following the installation of the new CDRA beds back in May of this year. Ground teams will be reviewing the data and developing a leak repair task for the crew to perform in the future. Overnight, the N3 CDRA was activated and operated nominally following the replacement of Air Selector Valve (ASV) 104, and it is actively scrubbing Carbon Dioxide (CO2). ASV Spares Correction – Yesterday’s Daily Summary Report stated that the next CDRA ASV spare is expected to arrive on HTV-5 which is incorrect. The next pristine spare is expected to arrive NET Orb-4. There are two degraded spares that can be cleaned on-orbit if needed. FLame Extinguishment Experiment (FLEX)-2J: Yesterday, Ground Controllers resumed operations of FLEX-2J. After two successful runs of Test Point (TP)-1, soot was observed to be accumulating along the fiber. Ground controllers attempted to investigate the extent of the soot deposits along the fiber to determine if the soot could be removed. During the investigation through manual commanding, a hardware interference between the fiber arm tip and the needle occurred and resulted in a break in the fiber. A fiber replacement activity is required prior to resumption of operations. Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Return Grille Cleaning: Kelly removed return grille mesh covers and cleaned inside the return grilles of the Japanese Pressurized Module (JPM) and Japanese Experiment Logistics Module – Pressurized Section (JLP). Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Operations: Last night Robotics Ground Controllers powered up the MSS and maneuvered the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) to grapple the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) using Latching End Effector B (LEE-B). This grapple was done in Gear Box Limping (GBL) mode as part of the checkout of this feature which was designed to reduce the rigidization force required to capture a fixed grapple fixture. Comet Tails and Star Trails

After grazing the western horizon on northern summer evenings Comet PanSTARRS (also known as C/2014 Q1) climbed higher in southern winter skies. A visitor to the inner Solar System discovered in August 2014 by the prolific panSTARRS survey, the comet was captured here on July 17. Comet and colorful tails were imaged from Home Observatory in Mackay, Queensland, Australia. The field of view spans just over 1 degree. Sweeping quickly across a the sky this comet PanSTARRS was closest to planet Earth about 2 days later. Still, the faint stars of the constellation Cancer left short trails in the telescopic image aligned to track the comet's rapid motion. PanSTARRS' bluish ion tails stream away from the Sun, buffetted by the solar wind. Driven by the pressure of sunlight, its more diffuse yellowish dust tail is pushed outward and lags behind the comet's orbit. ( http://ift.tt/1JwrsZR ) The human is reluctant to change. Full Disclosure is, sometimes, the only solution to improve Security by forcing the change. RIPE, Reseau IP Europeen (European IP Networks), is in charge of IP allowance in Europe ( http://ift.tt/1Vsm6YN ). In 2011, I had grabbed all the authentication MD5s of the RIPE database before they were taken out from the public view and RIPE asked people to change their passwords. These MD5s were public-made available in WHOIS reponses for years. I don't think I was the only security researcher who downloaded all the hashes. Clearly, there were a lot of people who had this database. The 36.000 hashes stayed in my hard disk for 4 years. Finding them again in 2015 in my $HOME, some may have wanted to deface the WHOIS RIPE database by inserting giant ASCII penises everywhere and changing IP attributions. Instead, I contacted the RIPE NCC Information Security Officer and then the RIPE Database Working Group Members, hoping to have open discussions and find a solution: - [db-wg] MD5s of the RIPE database, Deprecation of MD5 and safe authentication methods ( http://ift.tt/1Jwrv84 ). As I said in the first email: According to the RIPE transparency, as recommended by RIPE NCC Security, therefore I am now contacting this working group to work together because deprecation of MD5 is an important change in the RIPE database and it must be debated in a democratic manner. This john-compatible file (containing MNT logins and MD5 hashs) was never exposed to public but the hashes can be (VERY) easily cracked. From the discussion with RIPE Security (who received a copy of this file), 27.000 usable hashes (on a total of 36.000) appeared to be valid til now. When I discussed it with RIPE NCC Security, I gave a 90 day disclosure policy about this "public" information, starting from the 16 Apr 2015. The 90 day period can be adjusted by adding more days at the end if RIPE shows a good progress of the migration. I wanted to do responsible disclosure when I saw the RIPE Responsible Disclosure Policy which is a Really Good Thing, I think. My analysis is simple: The MD5 authentication is broken for years and it's time to change to a more secure method. I think people needs to be encouraged to move to SSO authentication. Using MD5 now is unsafe and dangerous, especially with unchanged 4 year-old passwords. Please share your thoughts about this situation. I will be happy to debate with you. After a debate with the RIPE working group about the impact of the fact 27.000 hashes were still usable (75% of total valid hashes 36.000) and MD5 is prone to collision attacks, and the ethics in releasing this information, which was not the point, I think, RIPE changed the affected passwords and encouraged stronger authentication methods. Again, the hashes (and the decrypted passwords) are now UNUSABLE to anyone. I want to thank all the RIPE participants in the Database Working Group for exchanging their opinions about this problem, especialy Tim Bruijnzeels and Ivo Dijkhuis, from RIPE. Even if, sometimes, we didn't share the same ideas, the debate was democractic allowing people to share their visions of improving security in RIPE. I really think RIPE managed this problem in an effective manner, improving the security of their IT infrastructure. A Review of Network Traffic Analysis and Prediction Techniques. (arXiv:1507.05722v1 [cs.NI])

Analysis and prediction of network traffic has applications in wide comprehensive set of areas and has newly attracted significant number of studies. Different kinds of experiments are conducted and summarized to identify various problems in existing computer network applications. Network traffic analysis and prediction is a proactive approach to ensure secure, reliable and qualitative network communication. Various techniques are proposed and experimented for analyzing network traffic including neural network based techniques to data mining techniques. Similarly, various Linear and non-linear models are proposed for network traffic prediction. Several interesting combinations of network analysis and prediction techniques are implemented to attain efficient and effective results.

Efficient Dodgson-Score Calculation Using Heuristics and Parallel Computing. (arXiv:1507.05875v1 [cs.AI])

Conflict of interest is the permanent companion of any population of agents (computational or biological). For that reason, the ability to compromise is of paramount importance, making voting a key element of societal mechanisms. One of the voting procedures most often discussed in the literature and, due to its intuitiveness, also conceptually quite appealing is Charles Dodgson's scoring rule, basically using the respective closeness to being a Condorcet winner for evaluating competing alternatives. In this paper, we offer insights on the practical limits of algorithms computing the exact Dodgson scores from a number of votes. While the problem itself is theoretically intractable, this work proposes and analyses five different solutions which try distinct approaches to practically solve the issue in an effective manner. Additionally, three of the discussed procedures can be run in parallel which has the potential of drastically reducing the problem size.

Decision Maker based on Atomic Switches. (arXiv:1507.05895v1 [cs.AI])

We propose a simple model for an atomic switch-based decision maker (ASDM), and show that, as long as its total volume of precipitated Ag atoms is conserved when coupled with suitable operations, an atomic switch system provides a sophisticated "decision-making" capability that is known to be one of the most important intellectual abilities in human beings. We considered the multi-armed bandit problem (MAB); the problem of finding, as accurately and quickly as possible, the most profitable option from a set of options that gives stochastic rewards. These decisions are made as dictated by each volume of precipitated Ag atoms, which is moved in a manner similar to the fluctuations of a rigid body in a tug-of-war game. The "tug-of-war (TOW) dynamics" of the ASDM exhibits higher efficiency than conventional MAB solvers. We show analytical calculations that validate the statistical reasons for the ASDM dynamics to produce such high performance, despite its simplicity. These results imply that various physical systems, in which some conservation law holds, can be used to implement efficient "decision-making objects." Efficient MAB solvers are useful for many practical applications, because MAB abstracts a variety of decision-making problems in real- world situations where an efficient trial-and-error is required. The proposed scheme will introduce a new physics-based analog computing paradigm, which will include such things as "intelligent nano devices" and "intelligent information networks" based on self-detection and self-judgment.

Generalized Totalizer Encoding for Pseudo-Boolean Constraints. (arXiv:1507.05920v1 [cs.LO])

Pseudo-Boolean constraints, also known as 0-1 Integer Linear Constraints, are used to model many real-world problems. A common approach to solve these constraints is to encode them into a SAT formula. The runtime of the SAT solver on such formula is sensitive to the manner in which the given pseudo-Boolean constraints are encoded. In this paper, we propose generalized Totalizer encoding (GTE), which is an arc-consistency preserving extension of the Totalizer encoding to pseudo-Boolean constraints. Unlike some other encodings, the number of auxiliary variables required for GTE does not depend on the magnitudes of the coefficients. Instead, it depends on the number of distinct combinations of these coefficients. We show the superiority of GTE with respect to other encodings when large pseudo-Boolean constraints have low number of distinct coefficients. Our experimental results also show that GTE remains competitive even when the pseudo-Boolean constraints do not have this characteristic.

Language Models for Image Captioning: The Quirks and What Works. (arXiv:1505.01809v2 [cs.CL] UPDATED)

Two recent approaches have achieved state-of-the-art results in image captioning. The first uses a pipelined process where a set of candidate words is generated by a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on images, and then a maximum entropy (ME) language model is used to arrange these words into a coherent sentence. The second uses the penultimate activation layer of the CNN as input to a recurrent neural network (RNN) that then generates the caption sequence. In this paper, we compare the merits of these different language modeling approaches for the first time by using the same state-of-the-art CNN as input. We examine issues in the different approaches, including linguistic irregularities, caption repetition, and data set overlap. By combining key aspects of the ME and RNN methods, we achieve a new record performance over previously published results on the benchmark COCO dataset. However, the gains we see in BLEU do not translate to human judgments.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 07/20/15

Habitability: Kelly used the iShort application on the iPad to document his observations on the habitability of the ISS. Habitability assesses the relationship between crew members and their environment in order to better prepare for future long-duration spaceflights to destinations, such as Near Earth Asteroids (NEA) and Mars. The ultimate goal is to understand how much habitable volume is required for vehicle internal design and layout, and if mission duration impacts the volume needed. Observations during the 1-year mission, as well as 6-month missions, can help spacecraft designers understand how much habitable volume is required, and whether a mission’s duration impacts how much space crew members need. The iShort application will enable ground support teams and human factor engineers to study and evaluate the design of the ISS and use these results for future spacecraft. Reaction Self-Test (RST) Sleep Shift: This week, both Kelly and Kornienko continued with their 1YM protocols, beginning a week of Reaction Self-Tests to document any changes due to the sleep shift required for the 43Soyuz docking. The crew will perform a test upon wakeup and a second test prior to their scheduled sleep period. Reaction Self-Test is a portable, five-minute task that enables astronauts to monitor the daily effects of fatigue on performance while in space. Sleep restrictions and residual effects from sleep medications, slam shifts that change the sleep/wake cycle, and effects from spacewalks can cause fatigue and degrade astronaut performance. Periodically during the mission, and in association with major events, an astronaut performs a reaction-time test on a computer to measure changes in responses. Node 3 Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) Activities: Today, Kelly replaced the N3 CDRA Air Selector Valve (ASV) 104. The valve was successfully checked out by the ground. This newly installed valve is the last pristine spare on-orbit, one more will arrive on HTV-5 (Aug 2015). The crew will also perform an inspection with Ultrasonic Leak Detector (ULD) today, to locate a leak discovered following the installation of the new CDRA beds back in May of this year. The ground team will review the ULD data from today’s operations and develop a leak repair task for the crew to perform in the next few weeks. Ground teams will be performing N3 CDRA activation overnight. Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Operations: Robotics ground controllers are planning to stow the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) from the LAB Power Data Grapple Fixture (PDGF). As part of the procedure ground controllers will be checking out the Gearbox Limping feature on the Special Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and characterizing the Latching End Effector (LEE) Force Moment Sensor under loaded operations.
