This article explains in detail the origin the function names CAR and CDR. The article suggests that CAR and CDR are the basis of an access language for retrieving elements from tree containers. It provides some simple rules for reading the condensed forms of repeated CAR and CDR, e.g. CADR. This technique might be especially useful for students who are learning LISP. The article also suggests some extensions for this LISP tree access language.
